I was in Glasgow to see Deep Purple and the orchestra perform this show, the first time I have seen them since Steve Morse joined. I knew that there was no way we were going to get Made in Japan II, but as a fan of their more recent albums I was interested to see what they sounded like.
I needn't have worried - sure Ian Gillan can't hit the high notes any more (and sensibly didn't try), there was no drum solo and the wilder excesses of the Blackmore/Lord double act were nowhere to be seen, but what a show. The orchestra filled out and enhanced the sound, Roger Glover and Ian Paice are surely the greatest rhythm section in rock history, and the 'new' boys Steve Morse and Don Airey sure can play.
The set list was a bit light on the new stuff for my liking, but it was billed as the 'Songs that Built Rock' tour so it pretty much delivered on that. I was delighted to hear Hard Lovin' Man and No One Came, and to open the encore with Hush was just a sheer joy.
At their prime? Possibly not. A band comfortable with each other, playing classic songs fantastically well and having a great time? You betcha.

This recording can not be compared with the earlier orchestral works of the band. This is a rock consert with a full orchestra and not a classical consert with a rock band. You can always miss the brilliance of Lord/Blackmore but Morse fit the the new metalsound very well.Glover/Paice maybe not sounds so heavy as they can but the sound gets very massive with a orchestra behind. Sad but truly, Gillian is the weak spot. One can not of course expect that a man past 60 hit the high notes as he he did in his 30's. But he probably should lower his ambitions or get help from aditional singers. It helps of course that songs like Child in time are cut out of the repertory. Still this is the best live recording Deep Purple have done in ages. Sound and production, brilliant. Recomended too old and new listeners.

It is a matter of opinion, but I think Deep Purple are still a top top band and are still fresh despite their 40+ years history. They have put out some great albums since their 'classic' period, which varies depending on who you speak to, Rapture of the Deep, Bananas and Perpindicular to name but three. This concert cover all the standards and some later offering. Having a full orchestra gives everything a new lease of life and the interaction with Steve Morse and Don Airey is superb. The orchestra are used to fill and supplement and this is in no way OTT, in fact they don't accompany on every song. This is a great concert and they clearly enjoyed it. I can't way to see them in Manchester next week. Deep Purple sadly wont go on forever, but their misic will. A great DVD!

This concert is an outstanding 2 hour performance by the band. Gillan can still hit and hold the notes, and is so comfortable with the audience! All the band members have a solo opportunity and do not disappoint. The orchestra are a brilliant accompaniment and do not seem at all out of place. The picture is sharp, and moment my moment relevent to what's going on. The audio is clear and well balanced. This is one of the best captured concerts I know of - truly superb compared to almost any other. Buy it!

bought this for my husband as he is a big fan.the dvd was fantastic and he is looking forward to more releases to come from deep purple to add to his collection.

Nostalgia for all times sake
