Format:DVD
These guys can play no doubt, we knew that for years! But I am always suspicious about reunions. However there's no need for this on "Returns - Live at Montreux". The energy is there from track 1. Probably Corea, Clarke, Di Meola and White have saved some of their power over the last 30 years for this event. There are a lot of smiles on their faces and this DVD puts one on my face to. The material comes from their mid 70's period and is simply proof of the fact what a great band this was back then. Old jazz fusion fans should buy this for simple pleasure, new ones (any?) just to know how good it can get.

I already owned the SD version of this DVD and reviewed it previously on Amazon. On purchasing a new 1080 HD TV and Blu-Ray player this was my first choice Concert footage Blu-Ray to purchase. It's incredible....just like being at the concert. The SD version had already offered great 5.1 audio which gives the feel of being at the concert, the Blu-Ray makes you feel you are "on stage" with the band. I love the HD pictures. They've been kept simple, no complicated colour correction or Vis. FX, just camera output at high resolution. Consequently you can see the dust on Chick's keyboards if you care to look closely. A great record of this amazing band's short-lived re-unite.

Many Bands are reforming these days. But I, like many others, have been waiting patiently for RTF to follow the trend and last year dreams came true. I was lucky to see them live in the Uk which was "stunning". The only thing missing was a record of the event. Well luckily a few days after I'd seen them their performance at the Montreux jazz festival was captured in full HD and 5.1 Dolby digital. Perfection!
The Filming is simple with very little editing and the 5.1 mix allows the listener to believe they are in the auditorium with the band. Needless to say the playing and performance by Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White is superb.
My only gripe is that the tune "Duel of Jester and Tyrant" (the Band's encore) is treated as "extra" footage and is offered as a split screen version only. Nevermind though, easily my favourite DVD and I think it will remain so unless the band decide to go through the process again.

RTF Returns DVD
