OK: We have Yessongs from the band as Young Turks in the `70s, we have the technical mastery of Keys to Ascension at the turn of the century, we have live Yes barnstorming at the House of Blues, we have Yesshows, and - if you really want it - we have The Word is Live. Do we need Yes at Montreux?

The good:

- Good to great audio quality - miles away from the awful "Word is Live" material
- Quite a few rare live tracks - South Side of the Sky, We Have Heaven
- Loose and different arrangements, and some playfulness. Chris and Alan breaking into "Tempus Fugit" in the middle of "The Fish", and quoting "Silent Wings of Freedom" too. Rick doing a great atmospheric intro to "Don't Kill the Whale".
- a LOT of Fragile. Their best album ;-). Well, a contender, anyway.
- some nice touches of Jon the Ringmaster, with tambourine and some talk between songs.
- Classic Yes - Jon, Chris, Steve, Rick and Alan.

The bad:

- The usual old warhorses - And You and I, Siberian Khatru
- Some imperfect mixing in places, and some experiments that don't quite work along with the ones that do.
- A couple of off-key harmonies from Steve Howe (I think) in places - Don't Kill the Whale and We Have Heaven not least.

The whole is more than these parts. This is a Jazz Festival performance, not grandstand Arena Rock. It's a bit more subtle, and a whole lot more fun. The guys really sound like they're enjoying themselves; the music is sparkling and alive.

A big YES fan--CLOSE TO THE EDGE remains, in my opinionated opinion, the greatest rock album of all time; YES are incredible live--I purchased LIVE AT MONTREUX 2003 the very moment I learned of it's availability.

A new YESSONGS? Not so sure... If, like me, you'll be adding this to your collection--I bought the DVD too--you may want to check your expectations. On the plus side, as you move through this 2 CD set, it picks up. I've no doubt the crowd loved the show: the effect of recency on memory.

"Siberian Khatru"--good... If you see Joe Satriani live he improvises on his classics; keeps the standards fresh. Would be great to hear Steve Howe and Rick Wakemean do the same.

"Magnification"--On the whole I like the MAGNIFICATION album. Not one of YES's best, but it's always good to hear new YES music. Sadly.. "Magnification" just doesn't work live... Too much Jon Anderson, too little band, the mix sounds hollow, something's missing... When I first heard MAGNIFICATION songs live they didn't play well, but I figured the more they were played live the better they'd get. Still sound the same.

"Don't Kill The Whale"--This has always been one of my least favorite YES songs: even in the 80s the mix seemed wrong. Someone who loves this tune should review it. (GOING FOR THE ONE has some excellent alternatives, like "Parallels" which is on YESSHOWS.)

"In The Presence Of"--One of my favorite tracks from the MAGNIFICATION album. Again... see notes on "Magnification" above... it just doesn't work live. The background vocals detract. (Why? They're fine on "South Side, "And You & I"?) Seems to me "Presence" could be great live... Once again, with feeling...

I have been "hovering" over this for some time. Then - I took the plunge and am glad I did.
I suppose the "classic" Yes Live is Yessongs". However, what I really like about this is the feeling of more intimacy. Less arena and more "Town Hall. But do not get the wrong impression - the sound is very good!
The "classic" (I'm going to wear that word out!), Yes line-up performing some "classic" Yes material. But to my old ears, this sounds tighter. I'll forgive Mr Anderson's bit of fun with "We Have Heaven" - in the main the band is running hot.
The songs are just too well known to go over and over them but there is a freshness here; the guys seem really comfortable.
I cannot let "Awaken" go - one of my real favourites; and here they turn on the power with a spectacular performance! Then again "Magnification" sounds good and I am less familar with some of this material - the same with "In The Presence Of" - they do inject a bit of variety.
I could go to five stars but will settle for 4 as it is - in many ways - "Greatest Hits".
Whatever - I am glad I have this now and the band plays on!

Classic Yes. They do old favourites like "heart of the sunrise" and "I've seen all good people" as well as live versions of "We have heaven" and "South side of the sky". The band are on good form. Yes also do songs from their "Magnification" album. It's interesting to hear Rick Wakeman play the orchestral bits. If you're a Yes freak like me you won't be disappointed. Steve Howe plays a couple of accoustic guitar numbers, namely,"To be over" and "Clap" which are both crowd plesers.
