Biography

Whitesnake are an English rock band, founded in 1977 by David Coverdale (formerly of Deep Purple). The band's early material has been compared by critics to Deep Purple but by the mid 1980s Whitesnake had moved away from the early blues influenced hard rock to a more commercial heavy metal style. Whitesnake was named the 85th greatest hard rock band of all time by ... Read more in Amazon's Whitesnake Store

Like many that have written reviews, I also possess the original FM broadcast bootleg from the concert and, like many, I was disappointed at the removal of much of DC's crowd banter and general rabble rousing, which most WS fans already realise is very much part of the appeal of the band live. The actual sound of the CDs is better, obviously, than the bootleg, but, like the broadcast and concert, has far too much Steve Vai solo spot/showing off. It wasn't, really, the best time on WS history in terms of the band gelling, with Vai being given far too much prominence to the exclusion of the equally talented but more restrained Vandenberg, but it does mark their commercial height.

The DVD, sadly, is almost completely lacking. Like many bootleg concert DVDs, this was never meant to be released commercially and the footage is just what was shot for the large video screens on the day, so there are very few long shots or crowd shots at all. It makes it a very two dimensional concert and not a little flat. The director's choice of focusing on DC or Tommy while half the guitar solos are ongoing, and then on the wrong guitar player, is also rather bizarre and very irritating. The camera work is rather flaky, often wobbly and too often features constant focus adjustments as well. It's not terrible, but I was hoping for so much more.

What saves this release, and should stop you buying just the CD version, is the extra 20 minute "Behind The Scenes" documentary. It's truly wonderful. Filmed mainly during pre-production for the album, you'll get to actually hear how many songs would have sounded with Adrian playing, instead of Vai. There are are also a few lost songs and outtakes being played, including Vandenberg's own Burning Heart with DC singing.

Cant believe its 20 years plus since i taped this off the radio,it sounded huge then it sounds huge now,a stunning audio recording of Mr Coverdale's triumph, bringing Whitesnake home as one of the biggest bands in the world.

The audio sound is fantastic with all the stadium rockers performed to perfection 'Judgement Day','Slow N Easy','Is This Love','Aint Love In The Heart Of The City' & 'Still Of The Night', while others such as 'Fool For Your Lovin','Slide It In' and 'Slip Of The Tongue' hit the spot.

Im still stunned 20 years on that Vai was allowed to perform solo tracks but they are both excellent, the guitar solo's and drum solo in the middle of 'Cryin In The Rain' i can take or leave, but thats what the skip button is for if you choose.

The band were on fire and this release captures the moment perfectly, there are a couple of occasions were the Coverdale voice falters but generally its a sterling performance, well worth purchasing.

The Dvd has raised a few eyebrows given its picture quality, lets be honest if a pristine version existed it would have been issued years ago,so lets be thankful for what we've got,its a bargain at this price,im more annoyed at the switching back n forth from color to black and white, does my head in.

The picture quality varies, treat it as a decent bootleg, you would have paid a lot more back in the day.

Packaging is pretty good, fold out sleeve with a ok booklet with a few words from Mr Coverdale, incidentally David,if your reading this ,are we really to believe this set has been requested for release more than the 1979 & 1980 Reading live sets?,C'mon give us old timers a treat,a double disc from Reading would be the icing on the cake.

Absolutely amazing CD, set list is awesome, sound quality tip top, memories that race back take my breath away (I was a 16 year old at boarding school in Penang when 1987 came out), I'm not ashamed to say that Here I Go Again brought tears to my eyes.

And on top of all that Steve Vai does two of his own solo tracks too, For The Love Of God and The Audience Is Listening.

Quite simply the best CD I have bought for years and years.

I respect all the good and bad, 5 stars and 4 stars, long and short reviews. But I don't care about video quality or audio mix or anything. Let me make it sweet and short for a 5 star review.

This is Whitesnake in their heydays. 80's or early 90's when rock 'n' roll, long hair and guitars ruled. If it was recent day concert, I could not be bothered. I was not bothered at first.

2 CDs and 1 DVD. Listening to CDs, I imagine myself standing in front of the stage banging my head and doing devil horns gesture in the air \,,/, I am enjoying the DVD even more just watching the Gods of rock 'n' roll live. So much fun. I delayed my lunch. I delayed my work. I did not even close my eyes for a second.

David Coverdale on vocal. A brilliant rock singer the world will ever know. Adrain Vandenberg on guitar. I love this cool guy and I love his 'Best Of Vandenberg'. Steve Vai on guitar. My guitar idol, his royal darkness the 7 string sorcerer Mr. Passion and Warfare. Tommy Aldridge on drums. He is mad to hit drums hard with his bare hands. Crazy ! I call it Rock 'N' Roll ! And Rudy Sarzo on bass. I never heard of him but he is cool and rocking.

Oh ! How I wish I were one of these thousand fortunate audience at Donington. Those days are gone to never return back. But it's packed here in this set of discs. Grab it ! Bring back the 80's when Rock ruled. Rock 'N' Roll \,,/,
