5.0 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack 19 Aug 2008
By LXIX TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
This is a tremendous soundtrack and is one of the musical highlights from the Bond series. Atmospheric throughout and varied e.g. it contains the jazz song from the New Orleans funeral march, the rousing main theme from Paul McCartney & co, cover versions of the main theme, funk/soul from the New York (Harlem) parts of the film and even backdrop music to the voodoo dances.

The legendary producer/composer George Martin did a great job here. I would say this is the best of the non-John Barry soundtracks from the Bond series. You're also getting a great bang for the buck here as this is the digitally remastered version and contains 8 additional tracks not featured on the previous release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supreme! 23 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This score/soundtrack to what is perhaps the most memorable of all Bond movies truly introduces Bond to the new era. The music is cleary seventies and combined with the classic Bond theme and numerous variations thereof is simply stunning. I urge anyone who saw Live and Let Die when it came out to get this soundtrack and acquire a piece of JB history. A real treat

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW WOW WOW!!! 23 Nov 1999
Format:Audio CD
I stand corrected in my assumption that no-one could better John Barry in the Bond department. From the producer of The Beatles, George Martin, comes one of the best soundtracks to a Bond film to date. The usual orchestral moods replaced by wah wah guitars accompanied by fabulous crescendos of sheer delight. Wonderfully upbeat and a perfect choice to accompany Roger Moore's first appearance as the suave superspy. Terrific on all accounts!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Bond Soundtrack!! 19 July 2005
By S. Hind
Format:Audio CD
This has to be the best bond soundtrack. George Martin really delivers the style that Live and Let Die needed. I only wish that he had done more, (John Barry still does a great job).

James Bond Composers should really look upon this and see where theyre going wrong. Just Buy it, you wont regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Bond Soundtrack 30 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had a vinyl version of Live & Let Die from years ago. I love this album every track is a crafted piece of ear candy. This CD contains some extras from the film like the boat chase sequence. I am a bit puzzled as to why my CD arrived without the usual cellophane seal that usually comes with mail order from Amazon. There's nothing wrong with the CD but I think it's been previously owned but I'm not sending it back as it was so cheap.

4.0 out of 5 stars No Barry? No problem! 20 Sep 2000
Format:Audio CD
For the first time in the series John Barry did not do the musical honours. Instead George Martin, former Beatles producer, took the role and produced a score more in keeping with the times than the Barry norm.

Here, like with most of the other soundtracks, there is a range of themes to suit most tastes. In keeping with the film's locations (the U.S., generally) themes like "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" (performed by the Olympia Brass Band) and "Fillet Of Soul - New Orleans--Live And Let Die--Fillet Of Soul - Harlem" give listener/viewer a feel for the scene. Included, it could be argued, would be "San Monique", but upon hearing this tune it would be difficult to guess a possible nationality. Supposedly Carribean I guess, but it doesn't convince.

More atmospheric tunes include "If He Finds It, Kill Him" and "Baron Samedi's Dance Of Death" - the latter being more of a playful jokey tune than anything else.

The James Bond Theme gets another reprise, but this version is different... it has a definitely early-Seventies bassy feel. It can be heard not only at the beginning, but also during the scene where Bond "keeps on the tail of that jukebox", following Kananga to the Fillet Of Soul. Although credited to Monty Norman (obviously) George Martin should get a mention for producing a very good contemporary version.

Of course, this little review would not be complete without the merest mention of the main theme to the film, "Live And Let Die", by Paul McCartney and Wings. Not only does it sound as fresh today as it did nearly thirty years ago, its (not nearly as good) remake by Guns 'N' Roses, suggests its popular appeal and thus its quality. Brilliant!

4.0 out of 5 stars The best non John Barry Bond score 12 Feb 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
"Live and let die" is by far the best of the Bond soundtracks John Barry never scored. After the success of "Diamonds are Forever" Cubby Brocolli invited John Barry back to score the next film, which would be Roger Moore's début in the role. When Barry turned the offer down ( Due to scheduling conflicts with his work for the west end play "Billy") Brocolli turned to the man who had turned The Beatles into global superstars producing all their albums, one Mr George Martin !

Now the choice of Martin as composer probably raised a few eyebrows ( No Roger Moore pun intended!!) as he seemed an odd choice to do a Bond score. Fortunately the gamble paid off and Martin's score easily ranks in the top 5 Bond scores of all time. Mixing Funk music, heavy percussion and traditional orchestral sounds - Martin delivers a very lively and should i say very Groovy soundtrack indeed ! The movie itself was made when Blaxplotation films ( such as Shaft) were dominating cinema's ( especially in the U.S) and the movie was definitely a cash in of sorts, even the film poster had all the hallmarks of a Blaxplotation movie poster !

The mixing of Funk, percussion and orchestra is largely successful and you couldn't have put this score into any other Bond movie as it would'nt have worked as well but in "Live and let die" it definitely adds to the mood and tone of the film.

Now i would have given this five stars but had to knock a star off because as good as this score is, it's also highly repetitive in places. Most of the tracks feature either a reworking of the title track, the james bond theme or the main action theme created for the picture and in some cases all 3 in the same track ! It's good stuff but by the end you'll kinda feel you've heard the same track a dozen times !
