However it is not mentioned in the publisher's advertising material that the words of many hymns have been changed, often to give non gender-specific language (e.g. "Good christians all rejoice").
Somtimes the changes are odd choices in hymns that are already archaic but well known (e.g. "with the needy, poor and lowly" instead of "with the poor and mean and lowly" in "Once in Royal David's City". A disturbing example is that the verse "O generous love that he who smote..." in John Henry Newman's "Praise to the holiest" is simply omitted. This is presumably to avoid the unreformable phrase "... in man for man the foe..."
One might agree or disagree with these changes but it would be good to know in advance that they have been made. Hence I hope these comments are useful.
