This DVD is an excellent adaptation of the book little women by Louisa May Alcott, with excellent actors/actress' such as Elizabeth Taylor. This is a classic must see film, that will have you laughing and crying at the same time. I have watched this film hundreds of times over many years and it is still the best film I have ever seen - unmissable!

This is, for me, the best ever adaptation of Louisa May Alcotts 'Little Women' It is perfectly cast, beautifully acted, and just how I had pictured the girls in my imagination. It's a lovely story, of 4 sisters, Meg, Jo Beth and Amy, and their mother and father, and their lives and loves. June Allyson is the perfect Jo, and Peter Lawford a very handsome Laurie. Elizabeth Taylor plays Amy to perfection, and it is just so totally like the book. I absolutely love this version, though I have seen them all. This is by far my all-time favourite. I love the opening where the girls are walking through the snow singing, and I ALWAYS cry over Beth. They just don't make 'em like this any more, sadly. A true gem.

This is the best version of the film. June Allyson is the definitive Jo March - it's all in the voice - the break in it that makes her sound as though she's permanently hoarse from lots of unladylike shouting. She's also a much more natural and able physical comedienne than the one-note (and much over-rated) Katherine Hepburn. Elizabeth Taylor was never funnier as the self obsessed coquette determined to improve her 'vocabillary' and bag a rich man. Peter Lawford is a surprisingly likeable Laurie (the male lead that for once doesn't dominate the film) and Lucile Watson's Aunt March - the posh relation the girls have to kow tow to for money - is utterly convincing and even manages to make her unsympathetic character rather loveable. The perfect Christmas film (So why wasn't it shown this Christmas? Why must we always suffer the more recent, humour-free, Wynona Ryder remake?)

Treat yourself and buy this (I got the Korean import, which plays fine on my bog standard DVD player) instead.

Excellent, brilliant, a really good story well told with the wonderful June Allyson so much better than the later re-make.

Most unusual for a film adaptation this is a true version of the book which gave Louisa May Alcott much needed prosperity and deservedly great fame. Despite a little artistic glamour it is nevertheless a most authentic and enchanting means of returning to her world. The fine cast, perfect music and brilliant direction would, I am sure, have delighted the author. This is indeed the definitive version.

I've been after this film for ages as a present for my wife. She says that it is by far and away the best of the various film versions of this book. And she is right. What a pity that it's only available as an import
