Biography

"This one feels a little different," Joan Osborne says of her new release Love and Hate. In addition to being the beloved singer-songwriter and seven-time Grammy nominee's eighth studio album and her eOne debut, the 12-song set is one of the most personally-charged, creatively ambitious efforts of her two-decades-plus recording career.

While Osborne has already earned a ... Read more in Amazon's Joan Osborne Store

By Mr. H TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
I'm probably the wrong person to be writing this. Why? Well, for me, Joan Osborne is the greatest female voice of the last twenty years. It's been an interesting, sometimes infuriating journey as I've followed her career, never knowing where she's going to end up next, but every trip has had something memorable to file away in my box of memories.

It's been 13 years since Relish hit the Top 10 on both sides of the Atlantic, spawning the huge hit single "One of Us", written by written by Eric Bazilian of The Hooters fame, and later covered by Prince on his Emancipation album. At that point it seemed that Ms Osborne was heading for the mainstream, with the minor hits "Right Hand Man" and "St. Teresa", also being culled from the album.

But Ms Osborne was no star struck teenager, having waited a long time for wider recognition, and she had her own path she wanted to follow. It took five years of banging heads with her record company before the follow up, Righteous Love, arrived, and it was clear that Joan had a muse she needed to follow. This was to include singing in the documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown, touring with the Funk Brothers, and appearing with the remaining members of the Grateful Dead after the passing of Jerry Garcia.

There was a soul album to release, How Sweet It Is, and a Christmas collection in the shape of Christmas Means Love. Not forgetting a country album, Pretty Little Stranger and a return to soul with Breakfast in Bed. That's when she wasn't touring with Phil Lesh & Friends, appearing at Celtic Connections festivals, or collaborating with people as varied as Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell and Spearhead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight to the heart 7 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD
I got this CD because it had been announced as her best work since Relish, but it turned out to be a far superior product in my opinion... Vocally, Joan is simply enchanting and seems to sing from the heart rather than the vocal chords. Lyrically, the songs are not literary masterpieces by a long shot, but once again they shine in their directness.
LWO comes across as a love declaration of sorts to Joan's New York City, Brooklyn more precisely, and most of the songs are suffused with delicate melancholy, especially Cathedrals (can't get it out of my head!), Little Wild One, To The One I Love and Daddy-O. If you liked Ladder and Lumina from Relish, than you should love this one too...
Interspersed among the smouldering ballads are perkier numbers such as Sweeter Than The Rest, Rodeo and Can't Say No, on which her powerful vocals really come into play.
An excellent album that I can't stop playing and will become one of the favourites in my collection. Go and listen some previews, and then buy the whole thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Up There With Relish 22 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD
Up there with 'Relish' but without the genius of St. Teresa and the Joplinesque Right Hand Man. Supreme tracks are the free-spirited melodic 'To The One I Love'and the Eastern European (Middle Eastern?) flavoured 'Can't Say No'. Every song brings out Joan's rootsy voice but her identity is not quite there yet (almost with 'Bury Me On The Battery'and 'Daddy-O'). The collaboration with Hyman, Bazilian, and Chertoff is an echo of the Fleetwood Mac team with Stevie Nicks. Heard Mick and John are looking for a replacement for Christine?

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleased overall 7 Dec 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Only had a few listens & there are some stand out tracks like Cathedrals & Little Wild One. I think some other will grow on me with time. Joan Osbourne's voice can't fail to impress. Just wish it had been a little cheaper.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a patch on Relish 25 April 2009
Format:Audio CD
I love Relish, so when I read good reviews for Little Wild One, I ordered it straight away. I was bitterly disappoionted. I hated almost every track. I thought it was utterly bland in comparison to Relish. Sorry Joan.
