Product Description

From the Publisher

The Little White Horse
"For a fleeting instant Maria thought she saw a little white horse with a flowing mane and tail, head raised, poised, halted in mid-flight, as though it had seen her and was glad."

The beautiful valley of Moonacre is shadowed by the memory of the Moon Princess and the mysterious little white horse. When Maria Merryweather comes there on a visit she finds herself involved with an ancient feud. She is determined to restore peace and happiness to the whole of Moonacre Valley. And Maria usually gets her own way* ?

"The Little White Horse was my favourite childhood book. I absolutely adored it. It had a cracking plot. It was scary and romantic in parts and had a feisty heroine." - J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, writing in The Bookseller.

Suitable for: Children aged 9+

ELIZABETH GOUDGE was a popular adult novelist who also wrote a number of well-loved children's fantasies. She was awarded the Libary Association's Carnegie Medal for The Little White Horse in 1946. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Youth revisited, 3 Oct 2006
By A. Simpson "Simpsoni" (Nottingham, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Little White Horse (Paperback)
I have just re- read The Little White Horse in one sitting on a beach in Tenerife. It is 25 years since I last read it and indeed had it read to me and I was immediately transported into a richly descriptive and morally fair world which I had forgotten. The warmth of the writing stayed with me and as my copy is battered I thought I would see if it is still in print and lo and behold here it is. Having read the reviews it would appear to me that the two critics who didn't like it came to the story later in life -the rest of us fans are re-reading a delight from childhood and revisiting feelings we had as children. You do have to view the words in historical context ( as you do with other writers such as Enid Blyton) but that doesn't detract from what is a great story for 8+ year old little girls who still want a bit of magic from a bygone age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favourite children's book, 19 Jul 2005
By CJ (London, UK) - See all my reviews
This was one of my favourite books as a child. I first read it when I was about 8 or 9 year old and the memory of it's atmosphere is still with me now. I can still smell the geraniums! I have bought it for my daughter and all my nieces and goddaughters and always have one in stock for a Christmas or birthday present.

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly charming, 8 Mar 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: The Little White Horse (Paperback)
This book is a doorway to a brighter and clearer world. The characters are wonderful; they are all very much themselves, each one an entirely different individual, with his own, colourful characteristics. In fact, one of the themes of the book, is how to be strongly yourself, yet live in harmony with others.

I like the spirit of service and duty, in the book. Marmaduke Scarlett, whose life is to cook sumptuous, mouthwatering dishes for the Merryweathers and their guests, no matter how many. It is his joy and his pride to serve in this creative way. And Miss Heliotrope, the governess, who was determined to love Maria, out of duty at first, until it turned into real love. The book inspires me to strive for higher things and not whinge and complain about my lot.

Apart from that, there is mystery and excitement and all set in a beautiful Devonshire valley.

I first read this book when I was ten, and at fourty-six, I still find it refreshing and enchanting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring
The pace of this book is far too slow to engage children. The author spends too long setting the scene and therefore the book is dull and unexciting. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Rejuvenating.
I love this book. Refreshingly uncynical and set in beautiful places, it's like an elixir, which I can sip when feeling jaded and world-weary.
