JM Barrie's 'Little White Bird' (by Forgotten Books) is enigmatic and as such would
benefit from extensive notes to the text. In the Dedication, that is situated at the
end of the book, Barrie reveals that the Little White Bird is a book that
should have been written by Mary A-, mother to David, the principle character.
Barrie also states that litle white birds are those birds that never have a mother.
David is the name given in the book to George Llewelyn Davies - one of
Barrie's most prominent child-muses.
Barrie, true to his journalistic calling, uses notes of his conversations with
David and other young children to create this book of stories that sow the seeds
of themes that are refined and dramatised in Peter Pan. 'Little White Bird'
is an entertaining book in its own right but it is mandatory reading for those
wishing to fully understand 'Peter Pan'.
