beautiful 27 Aug 2005
Format:Audio CD
This is a wonderful album. At first I thought the 'Norwegian Joni Mitchell' tag was over the top, but after a few listens I'm beginning to think this is spot on. There are other influences of course: at times she sounds how Bjork might have sounded if she'd gone towards jazz rather than electronica, and she can also sound like a less ambient version of Mum. On tracks such as Little Girl and Ease, the spirit of David Bowie during his Anthony Newley period creeps in, but this is no bad thing as the more playful tracks are balanced by beautiful songs like Searching, True Love and Displaced, in fact her voice reminds me of a more gentle Billie Holliday. The programming perfectly complements the use of such instruments as tuba, saxophone, clarinet, vibraphone and banjo, and the mood is enhanced by touches such as the softly running water in the background of Cast Anchor.

By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is far and away the most refreshing sound(s) I have heard since early Everything But the Girl and Robert Wyatt came to my attention. Hanne Hukkelberg from the fertile Oslo music scene offers 13 songs which are indeed Little Things in their sound, scope and titles. Little gems like Do Not As I Do, Cast Anchor and Ease offer an easy intimacy both with the subject of the songs and with the listener. Most selections have minimal backing-a tuba and pots and pans on one; running water, lap steel and clarinet on another. This brings her voice which reminds one of Billie Holliday only in vulnerabilty, into sharp relief and allows the lyrics to float along just above the backing. There is a little girl quality to her voice which adds an intimacy and immediateness and makes these songs totally her own. Songs are sequenced thoughtfully and a nod must be given to the use of cardboard in the packaging avoiding the dreaded plastic unjewel case. Si Scott decorated the outside of the folding case with an easy to recognize style of ink lines and swirls and inside is one photo of the artist herself looking out from a furry-hooded parka in an inviting half-smile. Wire Magazine placed one selection-Ease- as the #1 song on its Wire Trapper compilation a few issues back. Have I convinced you to take a chance on Little Things? You'll thank me for being so inspired that I wrote my first ever customer review. Hanne Hukkelberg may do the same for you.

Discover a GREAT new, fresh album! 26 Aug 2005
By MVN - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
An incredible debut for Hanne Hukkelberg, the Norwegian vocalist. Her fresh voice is unlike anything I've heard before, especially in juxtaposition with unlikely instruments like pots and pans and bicycle spokes. It is easy to be immediately swept by the lyrics, and the melody, but this is far from being "easy listening jazz" or boring predictable pop. Each track is full of eccentricities that will excite your ears and your mind. I've been listening to this album non-stop while I write and its proved to be an aid in my own creativity. I look forward to more from this emerging artist and hope she will make it to the USA to perform someday.

Very satisfying & soulful.. 11 Oct 2005

I've had this album for just a few short days, but it's definitely near the top of my favourite albums this year. Hanne works with interesting rythms pulled from bicycle spokes to mouth percussion. The way the percussion works with the soft and beautiful instrumentation and her soulful vocals is truly refreshing. -R.

It took me a while but I love this album now. There are some beautiful shifts in mood through some of the songs. Very unusual. I dont give out 5 stars easily. Hanne if you are out there come and play in Dublin.
