BBC Review

Although there may have been a dearth of great R&B in the middle of the 80s, Loose Ends was successfully able to challenge the notion that Britfunk was shallow and superficial. Formed in the late 70s as Loose End, their initial recordings were overseen by Chris and Eddie Amoo from Liverpudlian soul combo, The Real Thing.

By 1983, Jane Eugene, Carl McIntosh and Steve Nichol (who had played in The Jam’s horn section) had added the ‘s’ to their name and were signed by Virgin. Their accomplished debut album, A Little Spice, features a group who had spent time honing their sound. Whereas you were always aware that Linx or Light of the World could only have come from the UK, Loose Ends had a perfect transatlantic groove. This was due in no small part to the involvement of Philadelphia-based DJ and remixer Nick Martinelli, who’d recently moved into production with Fat Larry’s Band. Their Zoom had been a huge hit for Virgin.

A Little Spice is consistently strong. Three singles were taken from it: Tell Me What You Want, Choose Me and Dial 999, the latter titled Emergency (Dial 999) in the US. Eugene’s Evelyn King-influenced vocal on 999 stands side by side with anything that was coming out of New York at this juncture. Let’s Rock is a fantastic, accomplished piece of urban soul, albeit with all the requisite in-era machines. Music Takes Me Higher is the best here, though; a sultry swagger, with a breathtaking chorus vocal arrangement.

The original UK version of A Little Spice was released in late 1983, but was modified for the US market with the addition of their later mega hit Hangin’ on a String (Contemplating) (at the expense of the sweet yet fairly generic Feels So Right Now). It took the early Jam and Lewis sound back to US radio with a considerable degree of élan, and enjoyed recent exposure after it featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto IV.

America took the group to its heart, elevating the album to the R&B chart top five, while Hangin’ on a String (Contemplating) topped the R&B singles chart. By which time the group were ready with their follow up, So Where Are You, to capitalise on this success. --Daryl Easlea

CD Description

* Considered the premier U.K. soul band of the `80s and on to the `90s, Loose Ends was formed in 1981 with an original line-up of Carl MacIntosh, Steve Nichol and Jane Eugene.

* Originally known as "Loose End," the trio began recording a series of singles for Virgin Records in 1982. A year later, the group started work on their first LP with renowned Philadelphia producer Nick Martinelli cutting an entire album of original material, penned by the group members. In 1984, A LITTLE SPICE was issued in the UK and reached No. 46 on the UK album charts, spawning three charted singles, `Tell Me What You Want,' `(Emergency) Dial 999' and `Choose Me (Rescue Me).' The US version of the album was issued by MCA Records in 1985 and reached the Top 5 on the R&B charts and No. 46 on Billboard's Top 200 Album chart.

* This original UK version of A LITTLE SPICE has been out of print on CD for many years. This great expanded edition - co-produced by renowned US reissue producer Donald Cleveland and SoulMusic.com's David Nathan - includes the group's first three singles (as Loose End) and two additional Loose Ends non-album tracks as well as extended versions of the hit singles, `Tell Me What You Want' and `Choose Me (Rescue Me).'

* Notes by David Nathan include quotes from 2011 interviews with Carl, Jane and Steve, producer Nick Martinelli and others.

A promising debut. 21 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
The Uk soul trio's début from 1984 is given the SOULMUSIC,COM expanded treatment and serves as a mini 'best of 1982-84.
It now contains the single only tracks ('In The Sky' being particularly memorable)tacked on to the original lp;whose stand -out tracks include the galloping 'Emergancy (Dial 999) and slinky 'Choose Me (Rescue Me),both UK chart singles.
Well produced by American Nick Martinelli it's a must for lovers of UK 80s soul and this reissue contains informative sleeve notes by David Nathan..A BRILLIANT REISSUE!

Re-issue heaven 19 Dec 2011
Format:Audio CD
So good to have their first LP on CD together with the earlier UK-made singles (which I always thought were better than the later stuff); I only have one quibble - why use the dreadful US remix of We've Arrived? (it totally ruins the ambience of the track IMO). Classiest group ever.

A Little Spice Goes A Long Way 22 April 2002
By Armando M. Mesa - Published on Amazon.com

Loose Ends provided some of the best European/British R&B around for the 80's. Their brilliant artistry and sophisticated knack combined pop jazz with richly textured and syntehsized R & B grooves for an overall atmospheric experience. While one could still hear the Western R&B influence Loose Ends had they still possessed their own remarkable and unique flavor. I have yet to hear of another group in the new millennium that comes remotely close to these guys. They were the cream of the crop and still are in my music collection !

A Powerful Soulful Debut 7 Feb 2002
By muzyksohlchile - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I remember when "Hanging on a String" came out in '85. I was hooked. Never before have I heard such a sound. Then I saw the video and instantly I became a huge Loose Ends fan. To me, the group could do no wrong and that's evident with this smash U.S. debut album. Other gems that set the mood is the album's title track (also sampled by rap group Camp Lo),"Choose Me," and the funky "Tell Me What You Want." This CD is a definite treat.

Loose Ends.....UK R&B at its finest..... 24 Jan 2002
By "hersheekyss" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I grew up listening to Loose Ends due to my music loving mother who passed her passion on to me. And one of my fondest memories is cleaning up the house with her on the weekends playing all her Loose End LPs. Jane Eugene has the most soul-jerking voice and whatever she sings about you for sure understand, not to mention just the vibe that the group itself has goin on, it will blow you away. I also noticed that one of the reviewers was looking for the Real Chuckeeboo album, well you can find it at "http://www.townsend-records.co.uk/acatalog/Townsend_Catalogue_Loose_Ends_1256.html" And at that you get a CD so you can play it to death, they also have other Loose Ends CDs there so check it out if you're missing one from your collection. And dont hesitate to pick up A Little Spice, if ya dont you will regret it!!
