This version of the soundtrack to the hit musical is from the stage production, which ended rather differently than the movie: just about the entire cast (except for the backup singers) winds up as lunch for the hungry plant. As a result, this CD lacks the song "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space," which was written for the film. Instead, the recording closes with "Don't Feed the Plants," which is much more in keeping with the spirit of the rest of the musical. Little Shop of Horrors explores a wide variety of musical styles, from the rhumba-inflected "Mushnik and Son" to the I'm-on-Broadway ballads "Somewhere That's Green" and "Suddenly Seymour." The most spirited numbers are those that feature the trio of backup singers, who perform on the title track, "Skid Row," "Da-Doo," "The Meek Shall Inherit," and other numbers with considerable energy. The recording loses something if you haven't actually seen the stage production, but hearing this CD will give you an excellent reason to do so. --Genevieve Williams

It's no suprise that Frank Oz chose Ellen to re-play her role in the 1987 hit movie. Her voice is *stunning*. I remember watching this movie as a young child, entranced by her emotional portrayal of the sweet Audrey. I own the Movie cast, so I just HAD to get this for the cut songs! "Now (It's Just The Gas)" would have to be my favorite of those. Creepy, yet humorous, and in some ways...extreamly disturbing. I am one of the LSOH fans who prefer the 'happy ending', so "Sominex" was a little upsetting to hear. But Ellen's voice captivates you. :-) BUY THIS CD!

The original soundtrack to this great musical is by far better than the movie soundtrack! the additional songs that were tragically cut from the movie are excellent, providing even more opportunity to have a 'bop till u drop' sing along! particular favorites are 'Skid Row' and 'Dentist!', the comic genious behind the songs is a god send. this is a real retro, rock n roll show with music to cater for every tatse. an easy listening, 'long car journey' kind of soundtrack, where listening just passes the time that little bit quicker! i love it!

Before Mencken and Ashman achieved fame and fortune with Disney, they turned their hand to this rock and roll style adaptation of Roger Corman's low budget black movie comedy from 1960 about a man-eating alien plant. Due to Ashman's early death in 1991 it turned out to be their only collaboration written for the stage. The show opened off Broadway in 1982 and ran for more than 5 years making it one of the longest running off Broadway shows of all time. Amazingly it did not get its Broadway debut until 2003 when it ran for a little under a year. Its relative lack of success second time around was attributed to its unsuitability for a larger theatre and the intimacy of this terrific original off-Broadway cast recording goes some way to explaining that lack of large stage success. The only reason for four stars rather than five is that this isn't quite the polished article that for example Beauty and the Beast represented.
