Book Description

English-Spanish Version --In this beloved tale, Little Red Riding Hood is uneasy when her grandmother looks suspiciously like a sly wolf that she met along the way. Children will eagerly continue reading to see what will happen when the wolf shows how big and sharp his teeth are! Between the pages of the Brighter Child Keepsake Stories books are the classic tales of magic, imagination, and inspiration that will delight children again and again. From the hard-working Red Hen to the foolish Gingerbread Man, these stories will capture children's interest and spark their imagination page after page, inspiring a lifelong love of literature and reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars useful but tame 30 Mar. 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought a few of these books, and have found them to be a nice introduction to reading Spanish.

My only real objection is the actual story telling itself. As I grew up I heard this story in many guises, in some a heroic woodcutter came and saved the day, in others, well, it was a bit messy, the wolf won, and granny and little red riding hood were no more ...

... if you don't want to know how this version ends, read no further ...

I read the last pages of this translation in disbelief. These are folk stories that have in the background of them very useful lessons for young folks. Lessons that become watered down, when we water down the story.

In this version, we get past the whole "what big teeth you've got grandma", and the wolf pounces, little red riding hood ducks and the wolf just vanishes out of the window never to be seen again. The end. Lip service is paid to Little Red Riding Hood having learned her lesson, but it's almost as if there's no ending to the story. A classic folk story has been sanitized to the point of tedium.

Having said that, these are really nice books for learning Spanish. Cute artwork, nicely laid out, Spanish and English on the same or opposing pages...they're good. But if you want a classic version of this story, this really isn't it. But definitely worth the four stars as a book for starting reading Spanish.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent bilingual book 15 April 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book is fabulous! The pictures are full colour and have a very cute style. The text is bilingual which makes it a good tool for exposing your child to Spanish. This can be used as a bedtime story or for older children to read and learn from by themselves. However, I would not recommend this book for very young children as some of the Spanish words are very difficult. This book would be better for children who have had a fair amount of previous Spanish teaching. Overall, a really lovely book!

4.0 out of 5 stars great little resource 7 Dec. 2010
Format:Paperback
As a language teacher of young children aged 3 and above, I find this series of bi-lingual tales quite helpful. I don't always stick to the exact translation (sometimes simplifying it), but it provides an excellent framework for traditional stories that are familiar to the children and therefore facilitate story-telling in another language! My advice: don't just stick to the text, get your little ones to act out the key phrases and interact with the pictures too. My little girl asks me to read the English version first to reassure her and then we move on to the Spanish/French in small doses, but always trying to bring it to life in additional ways - we made a wolf mask for her teddy and used him to help tell the story!
