Book Description

24 Mar 2011
Little Red is on his way to visit his grandmother on the other side of the wood. Ignoring all warnings of wolves in the wood, he removes his coat and strays from the path. That s when the greedy wolf, lurking in the wood, hatches an evil plan. He steals the little boy's red coat and hurries to the cottage to gobble up Little Red s shortsighted grandmother. And Little Red is next on the menu! But can a keg of delicious sparkling ginger beer save him from a gruesome end? With settings from the fabulously quirky 'Ye Olde Belch' Inn to grandmother's eerie old cottage, this witty reworking of the classic tale is perfectly adapted to 18th-century England and is bursting with period detail. Other titles in the series: Cinderella and Rapunzel.

This is an outstanding picture book - a brilliant and original take on the old classic story of Red Riding Hood. In a most stylish and forward thinking way, the Roberts duo place the tale in an 18th century setting where you can imagine highway men pouncing upon unsuspecting horse-drawn carriages. Little Red is a young lad who wears an old-fashioned red coat, lives in an tavern frequented by travellers and takes a basket of ginger beer, cake and apples to his grandma. Wolf spies him, reaches Grandma's cottage first and gobbles her up, but in a twist designed for contemporary children Little Red cleverly persuades him to have some ginger beer. Wolf overdoes it with the fizz, and Grandma flies out of his mouth in an enormous (and hilarious if you are 3-7) burp.
The illustrations are wonderful, clean-lined yet detailed, and perfectly pitched to be dark and eerie for the young child yet cleverly remaining on the right side of terrifying. How could anyone be too scared of a wolf dressed in a wig, flowery dress and mob cap?
The best retelling of Red Riding Hood I have come across, this truly deserves to last the test of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great twist on the original 26 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I used this book with my Year 2 class, following on from a traditional version of Little Red Riding Hood. The pictures are brilliant and the similarities and differences to the original story provide the ideal vehicle for a comaprison: Little Red is a boy; he stops to pick apples; he has tea with the wolf; he overcomes the wolf by giving him ginger beer (which is tastier than Grandma); he burps out Grandma; he is a reformed character (or is he?) etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant alternative to Little Red Riding Hood 28 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am a primary school teacher doing the topic "Once upon a time".
This book was recommended by Hamilton Planning. I wanted to get my children writing more in the afternoon (topic lessons), especially the boys.
I think it's brilliant for boys as it offers a male main character, ginger beer and a burping wolf!
Not not to like?!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun 21 Nov 2012
Have just read this to 7yo boy and it really made us laugh (rare). The words play a great straight to the very funny drawings. I particularly loved the 18th c references. The pic of the wolf on the grandma's doorstep crammed into the red coat is very droll. It is also a good length, not too short.
