Being a big fan of Tom Holt, I can safely say that this by far is not his best. Although the story is original as ever, it seems to take ages to get from point A to B. The narrative is quite long and I found myself skipping pages/paragraphs, which was a first after having read eight of Holt's books. Unlike other books like Faust Among Equals and Flying Dutch (to name a few), this story does not hook you and you can easily drop the book at any point during the read to pick it up a month later if you felt like it. So my advice would be to avoid this in order not be disappointed given the great work he usually produces. For first time readers, looking for recommendations, try Faust Among Equals.
