It's a simple idea: start off with 10 penguins, and each page one of them disappears. There's a nice little rhyme, and tabs to pull/push so that the penguins vanish. The design and pictures are delightful.

The only thing is that on first reading some children do get slightly worried about where the penguins are all going - but they all pop up again at the end, so it turns out happily.

Really charming, much recommended.

This is one of my sons' favourite books. The pop ups are incredible, and have a lot of action. Its grand for learning to count to 10 forwards and backwards as well as simple subtraction. But it must be held a 90 degree angle or the pop ups stick and could be damaged. It is also likely to really upset some small children as the penguins appear to meet gruesome ends. In fact it all ends happily, but it did take some convincing with my 3 year old, so some parental caution is advised, and if a young child gets too upset - you might want to flip to the back of the book early.

We loved this book - I have already bought another by the same author and I do recommend it - but I woukld suggest that parents of young children read this themselves first.

Also - as many adults do collect pop up books now - if you know an adult collector - this book is unmissable.

love this book, little bit fragile for little fingers perhaps but worth it as it is great fun! slightly wicked sense of humour so some parents might like to check it out for themselves first, but most kids like a bit of peril don't they?! and a happy ending so all's well that ends well! little work of art and I reckon most adults would find this fun too.

This book is different, interesting and the pop ups are brilliant.
I would however like to point out that until the end where all the penguins pop up again, the book does make you believe they are dead. Not that they have "disappeared" like the description says, dead! This may concern your child. This is why it gets 4*'s instead of 5.

My son loves reading this book. Its one of those that you can pick up again after not reading it in ages and love it all over again. great pop ups, with moveable parts which he loves. Nice rhyming story to go along with it and its made made extremely well. I actually buy this for birthday presents for other children now, because I think its such a nice book. Do watch out if you have a sensitive soul to read it to - until you get to the end you think the penguins are all in big trouble!

My son (3 1/2yrs ) was spoilt as his first pop up was a copy of Haunted House that we picked up in charity shop without realising it was a classic. We then started looking for something as well engineered. This is actually better as the rhyming story and variety of movement are brilliant. It is also fairly robust - made of quite thick card and easy to grip tabs so he can move the penguins himself.
