About the Author

Hilary Robinson is the author of over 40 children's books including the top selling Mixed Up Fairy Tales and The Copper Tree, written to help children cope with death and loss. She is also a broadcaster and freelance BBC radio producer. Hilary was born in Devon and brought up in Nigeria and England. She started writing to help her young daughter cope with a fear of spiders and her second book Prima Spiderina, was shortlisted by the English Society for Best Picture Book. The Magical Book of Mix Ups (Spells and Smells) illustrated by Nick Sharratt was shortlisted for the Experian Big Three Award. Her books have been translated into a number of languages and are sold across the world. Hilary is related to William Wordsworth via a collateral branch of the poet's family. She lives and works in London and Yorkshire.

Shelagh McNicholas was born and grew up in Liverpool. She went on to study at Kingston University where she graduated with a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design & Illustration. Apart from a short time spent teaching life drawing, Shelagh has always worked as an illustrator as well as being a full time mum to her daughter, Molly. 'The Ballet Class' written by Adele Geras, was Shelagh's first picture book for Orchard Books. Her realistic and endearing illustrations perfectly complement the story of Tilly and her ambitions to become a top ballerina. Shelagh is passionate about drawing and is happiest with her sketchbook and pencils. Her favourite subject is her daughter and it was her sketches of Molly as a ballerina that inspired her illustrations for 'The Ballet Class'. Shelagh lives in Surrey with her daughter. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Format: Hardcover
from the LEAPFROG book series.

From the back cover:-

'On a cold winter evening, a little match girl tries to keep herself warm.
What wonderful things will she see in the flames of her matches?'

Example of text:-

`It was a cold winter evening.
A poor little girl was trying to earn money by selling matches.
As the sun set, party lights lit up in the windows.
The little match girl huddled behind a wall to keep warm.
"If I light just one match," she said, "I could warm my frozen feet."....'

And so she does.......and each time she lights a match she sees another vision in the flame..... before it flickers away.

A `happy' ending...... of sorts, and although it may not appeal to every young reader.... it certainly opens scope for discussion along the lines of life after death for an older age group.
(n.b. - The pictures of the `lifeless body' may upset more sensitive readers, therefore I would recommend adult perusal first, if possible.)

32 high quality shiny pages in the popular 2-page spread format. Numbered pages with clear, easy-to-follow text. Illustrated throughout.

'Leapfrog has been specially designed to fit the requirements of the National Literacy Strategy. It offers real books for beginning readers by top authors and illustrators.'

There are a number of `Leapfrog' stories to choose from and these are listed on the very last page.

I remember reading this when I was little and bought it for me to read to my four year old daughter. I must admit, I totally forgot how sad the story is and I couldn't remember that the poor little girl dies in the end! I chin wobbled through reading the whole thing with tears streaming down my face!! :/ My poor little girl was like " it's okay Mummy, I'll look after you!" All that aside, it's a lovely little book, with lovely illustrations.

i bought this as a present and i loved it. The illustrations are lovely. Its just a shame it seems so short. However it is only one story so what can you expect.

i read this story as a child and i remember how sad i felt for the little girl. Each picture that came when the match was lit was magical and you wanted each image to stay and as a child it teaches you to think about how other children just like you are suffering in the world. Children will always love this book even though it is sad.

Beautiful illustrations and lovely hard cover. The actual story is one of the best ever written and the combination makes for a perfect gift.

Bought this book as a special present for a little girl's 6th birthday as I remember really enjoying the story as a little girl. It is just as lovely and sad as I remembered and the olde world illustration make it more real. Little girl loved it and talked about how sad it was and how lucky she is.

This book was very good and I really enjoyed it I don't recall think I disliked it and I would probably recommend this to people who don't like those people in the streets and don't feel sorry for them.

Much preferred the original version. Modernising classics like this takes away some of the magic. So disappointed. Beautifully illustrated however.
