two-needle patterns!

I was excited to find a book of knit animal patterns that did NOT use DPNs! All of these patterns are knit using a pair of size 4 (US) needles and worsted weight yarn (a couple patterns also call for bulky novelty yarn). Sometimes the knitting gets tight and difficult when the pattern calls for a lot of quick increases, but it's still do-able. I've been making my creatures more kid/baby friendly by stitching eyes rather than using doll eyes and avoiding using felt (doesn't wash well). I do not care for the "invisible increase" the author wants us to use (and which I was unable to make work at all if it was called for on the first stitch in a row) so I just knit in the front and back of a stitch to make an increase and remember to count the second part of that increase as the next stitch called for in the pattern. So far I've made the octopus (SO cute!), a "gold"fish in a blue/white variegated yarn, the pig (without the shirt, I like it better that way), and the sheep. I am currently working on the angel fish and looking forward to a turtle next!

I bought this book on a day when I was feeling a little more ambitious than a beginning scarf-knitter should feel. The animals were so darn cute, and I just couldn't help myself! I got home expecting to be disappointed, frustrated, and covered in ripped out yarn within minutes. Instead I found that I could follow the patterns and instructions quite well! It has been so much fun making these little knitted animals and my one year old little boy can hardly wait for me to finish each one. Cute animals, easy instructions, and simple enough that the beginning knitter can wade through with a little patience and determination.
