Product Description

Product Description

The timely reissue of these, Stan Tracey's first two albums as a leader in his own right, restores to splendour two key pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that is the patchily documented British Modern Jazz scene of the 1950s. It also serves as a reminder of the long road which Stan Tracey has travelled in order to reach his current position of venerated elder statesman of the music. The original Vogue LPs have achieved legendary, even mythic, status, Little Klunk especially. 16 page booklet, reproducing original liner notes, plus an overview written by Simon Spillett.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stan Traceys first masterpiece 16 May 2003
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Stan is the UK's finest ever pianist, taking his influences from Duke Ellington & Thelonious Monk, Little Klunk was the first LP he recorded on piano (his very first LP Showacse being mainly on vibes)This is a trio LP featuring Kenny Napper on bass and another British Jazz legend Phil Seaman on drums. This is a most welcome re-issue, the vinyl sells for around the 100 should you be lucky enough to find an original 1959 copy. Tracks are Li'l Old Pottsville,
Dream Of Many Colours,We'll Call You, Free, Walk In The Park, Baby Blue, Little Klunk & Boo-bah. I'm looking forward to receiving my copy to replace that worn vinyl, treat yourself to a Jazz classic!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Very Welcome Reissue 19 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD
Stan Tracey is one of the finest jazz pianists and composers, not merely in his native Britain, or in Europe, but in the world. This is a welcome reissue of two albums from the late 1950s.

Showcase is a collection, as one may guess, of songs from musicals, many of which have become standards in the jazz world. Here, Tracey is still finding his feet, as it were, on the piano, and his distinctive style hadn't fully formed. That isn't to say that it's not superbly executed; it's a very enjoyable set.

Little Klunk, named after a cartoon character, came a year afterwards, when Tracey's distinctive, indeed unique, style had fully emerged. Backed by the powerful Kenny Napper on bass and Britain's best jazz drummer of the day, the late Phil Seamen, Tracey's composing and playing are first-rate. It's all great stuff, but listen most of all to the brooding masterpiece 'Boo-Bah'.

There's at least another dozen Stan Tracey albums that deserve to be re-released. Let's hope that this is the start of a reissue series.
