Product Description

Product Description
John O. Banion is convinced that he was abducted from his exclusive golf club by aliens. When he is kidnapped a second time, he realizes he has been chosen to spearhead a vital crusade - to persuade the White House to take alien abduction seriously. But were his abductors really aliens?

From the Publisher
This is the best book of Christopher Buckley's career.
This is the fourth book by Christopher Buckley I've had the privilege of editing. I think it's his best -- his most hilarious and also his truest. How, you might wonder, could a book about a pundit being abducted by aliens be true? Well, I guess you'll have to add this novel to your virtual shopping cart to find out, but let me suggest that the aliens in this book could just as easily be holy men, mystics, gurus, or other repositories of faith. Ultimately, LITTLE GREEN MEN is about what happens when people are compelled to express unfashionable beliefs. While this book was still in galleys, a Silicon Valley multimillionaire whiz kid, 28-year-old Joe Firmage, quit his high-profile executive position at USWeb to pursue his true passion -- spreading word that extraterrestrials are among us. Like the protagonist in Buckley's novel, this polite and respectable fellow believes he has been contacted by aliens. For stating these beliefs, he received a great deal of bemused national attention. (Time magazine's headline of 2/1/99: "From IPOs to UFOs") The truth is out there. That's what we want to believe. Even the current President of the United States, upon assuming office in 1992, sought answers to the unknowable: He asked a trusted adviser to find out two things: 1) Who killed JFK and 2) Are there UFOs? LITTLE GREEN MEN is satire, brilliantly realized. But beneath Buckley's sparkling wit, a deeper theme resonates, one that has stayed with me and continues to beguile and stir me. I hope you are as entertained and provoked by this novel as I am.

4.0 out of 5 stars Out of this World!, 30 Aug 2001
By Mr. TM JONES "Knowledgesponge" (South Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Little Green Men is all about the clandestine organisation that is responsible for the hoaxing of all UFO events, from sitings, through abductions, to "probing" and "harvesting".

Whent a memebr of the organisation does not get the move he desires, he decides to take matters into his own hands and orders the "abduction" of one of Washington's top media personalities. This sets of a chain of events that are amusing to the last.

The book opens up the worlds of UFO's, Washington Society and Political Arenas to inspection and ridicule. The characters are not stereotypical, and have a real depth delivered by Buckley's careful portrayal of the human psyche. It is easy to step into any of the shoes of the main players and feel for them.

All in all a very good read that will have you tittering away to yourself. As the covers suggests, it is for believers and non-believers alike and despite the comical thread is thought provoking. A strong recommendation from me!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Left unfinished, 17 Jul 2007
By SJSmith (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I got just over two thirds of the way through and decided I really wasn't interested in what happened and quite simply couldn't finish it. I think this book really has to be your cup of tea. I didn't laugh, I didn't find it funny.

When Nathan Stubbs doesn't get promoted he decides to take actions into his own hands and orders an alien abduction (well two actually) on the Washington talk-show host John Banion. John then decides to set the world to rights and I can't tell you if he did or not as I only got as far as his march/rally.

At one point I was convinced my copy was a proof as there were a lot of typos in there but it wasn't. I therefore wonder if it is the American style. If you believe Little Green Men are your thing or not you have to like the writing style of this book. The plot itself is an excellent concept which is what I was hoping was going to keep me going. However, it's a good cure for insomnia.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fast Fun Weekend read!, 31 Aug 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Little Green Men (Hardcover)
There were points in the book where I was laughing so hard I had to put it down. I was outside on the deck and the neighbours were giving me strange looks. I've recommended it to all my friends. Every once in a while we all need to read something "easy". Enjoy!
