I bought this 'encyclopedia' hoping to use it as a handy reference to find out why, for example, people started to cross their fingers for good luck. The entry on fingers, crossing says: "averts ill luck." Every other entry is as sparse.

The claims of extensive research are untrue. Not only is there no information about the origins of superstitions, but none about where they are practised, how extensively practised, or cultural variations.

Indeed the work is so shoddy it is possible that the authors could have simply invented many of the entries.

I've always been interested in superstitions across the world, and this litte gem is perfect for finding out about just that. It's easy to read, well organized and brilliant in every way. It's been well researched and gives short, but good explanitions of loads and loads of superstitions.

Well worth it. My copy is worn to shreds!
