Product Description

Bullied at school, nagged at home, there's only one place Billy feels really alive and happy--in the wilderness by the canal. There he watches over a family of fox cubs as they grow toward maturity. Then his secret is discovered, and the fox family is decimated. Unwanted, unloved, Billy and the one surviving fox cub run for their lives. Michael Morpurgo's compassionate story finds hope--and finally happiness--in the life of a vulnerable child, with beautifully detailed observations of wildlife. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Foster child Billy Bunch has always been an outsider until he discovers a new world, among the wild creatures of the riverbank. His experiences there lead him to a secure and happy future. Action, passion and emotion can be felt in this story involving bullying, and a family of foxes who need protection.
As a baby, nobody wanted Billy but he was fostered. One day he went into the wilderness while staying in a busy city with his foster carer, and finds a swan which he adores but the next day the swan was gone and ten he finds 4 foxes. Later in the story, 3 are gassed but the older cub survives and Billy Bunch adopts him. In the end, Billy sees the beautiful swan once more! I think it was a wonderful book and I think anybody and absolutely everyone who loves foxes and other animals will enjoy it. Because of the book's brilliance, wonderfulness and the touch of love, I would rate this book 1000000000000/ 10.

What a brilliant book 29 Jun 2010
A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
Billy gets his name from the person who found him and the place where he was found that is a bush. He lived with auntie may his foster parent but she wasn't very nice to him. He hated school because he stuttered and everyone made fun of him. The only thing he loved was nature. by the river he met a swan and in the wilderness he found a family of six foxes. He wanted to protect them but The parents were killed all but one cub was gassed. Billy ran away with the cub to the river. He met a man in a boat whose son had drowned in the river. The man rescued injured swans including Billy's swan. In the end the man and his wife adopted Billy and the fox cub too. I guessed straight away that the policeman at the end of the story would be the one that found Billy.

I think the story is brilliant because irt has lots of animals in it and when I grow up I ant to be a vet or a zookeeper or a forest ranger.I felt very sad when the mother fox was killed and when the baby foxes were gassed. There was a magical bit in the story because the swan kept appearing she seemed to be watching over Billy and the fox.

I used to like Julia Donaldson's stories best but now I like Michael Morpurgo best. I am going to read the Butterfly Lion next. I will let you know what I think of it.

I read this together with my two children, daughter 9 and son 7. We could not put it down! very well written, and a super storyline, a little sad in parts. We will certainly be reading more of his books.
