4.0 out of 5 stars A very unusual Film, 10 Sep 2007
By Soz (UK) - See all my reviews
This film uses simple subtitles only when needed as the expressive quality of the many little childrens' faces especialy the lead boy is astonishing. The scene is set in a large, busy residential state kindergarten with only two appearances of any parents.Being suddenly dropped off by his father the 4yr old boy knows nothing of toilet-training and other regimented routines, and is initiated firmly by the female staff with the resulting bewilderment of the child and his eventual rebellion and isolation. The film's colour is sensitive in contrast to a political regime being imposed on the very young children. At times relentless its without aggression, more like a dream, its captivating. The music throughout is well crafted for East/West fusion and there are amusing, delightful scenes of Play with excellent child voices. Underlying concerns build up tension for the filmwatcher but its resolved with a heartrending not artificial ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deceptively engaging, 2 Nov 2007

Who would have thought that a film about a load of 4 year old Chinese kids in post ww2 China would be so engaging. The director must be a very patient man to get the performances from the young actors. Very entertaining and heart-warming film.

3.0 out of 5 stars Far better than the Home Alone movies., 7 Feb 2008
By Eugene Nyunt (London, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The film is based on Chinese writer Wang Shuo's semi-autobiographical novel 'Could Be Beautiful', and plays itself out within the buildings and compound of a boarding school after the arrival of a pilot's son. He's a difficult lad and takes his time adjusting, spurred on through a yearning for those little red flowers that are emblems of being good. These are dispensed by the female teachers of the school. Various episodes of mischief and nonconformity sustain this movie - all centred on the above child.
Unlike the other reviewers on this site - and likewise some of the assessments made by professional critics - I didn't enjoy this film so much that I'd want to view it again. It's definitely 'sweet' and watching it I was truly amazed by the level of choreography and direction which must have gone into the performances of the main characters, ie. the children. On that point both the director and presumably the kids' minders/parents have done a fantastic job in encouraging the little ones.
However, as an adult viewer I very soon wearied of these infantile jinks which didn't engage with me at all. Actually throughout the film I was distracted by the incredible performances from the children - for instance the lead Dong Bowen was only five years old at the time. This is very much a children's film, and director Zhang Yuan has said that his was very much an attempt to restore some kind of reality to the portrayal of Chinese children's lives. In my view he overdoes his slightly, especially by including the scene where Dong Bowen takes a leak from a parapet. That said the film might appeal to Chinese-fluent kids or adults who're willing to persevere with the limited subject matter. I'm a little sceptical as to whether kids without Chinese would enjoy it. Zai Jian !

How the director and film crew managed to get about 40 tiny Chinese tots to perform so engagingly and obediently I can't imagine. Read more
