This is Randy at his best! Lyrically diverse is an understatement! This album is funny, moving, sad and just beautiful! If the superb 'Jolly Coppers' doesent put a smile on your face then the genius lyrics of 'Short People' definitely will! 'In Germany before the war' is a haunting song with a piano on it that sounds incredibly sinister. Every song on here gives you something different, and their all wonderful.

This is Randy with all the whistles and bells. If you like the idea of Randy at the piano, the subtle production of this album will amaze you without overwhelming the simple genius of Randy's writing. "Jolly Coppers" is a most infectious little pop tune, but "Germany Before the War" and "Baltimore" have that ironic edge that go on haunting long after they're gone. Oh yeah, and of course "Short People" is one of the greatest pop songs of the 20th century, in my humble opinion!

I've had this album on vinyl for donkey's years now and it is a big favourite. It's a bit scratched and all that, but that just adds to the warmth and the era from whence it came. I think it is one of Randy's best and "Baltimore" is perhaps my favourite song of his, lilting and beautiful and one of those songs you just listen to over and over. A lovely album, great on CD, I'm sure, but if you can get this on vinyl then do!

I lost my original copy years ago (well I have the box but somebody must have relieved me of its contents) and eventually decided to buy another copy. I'm so glad I did. This album just gets better and better with the passage of time. The overall atmosphere is brooding and slightly menacing combined with great sensitivity at times. Each song has created its own pathway in my memeory, they are all so good.
