A refreshing show 27 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
Five stars for this - not because it's a great work of poetic art, but because it's a lovely and thoughtful book that brought a smile to my face on both halves of my train journey. I've made a habit of reading classic poetry and poetry by famous names and I haven't really read poetry by a contemporary of mine since university, so I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this - but I loved it. The poems span Elise's life, from childhood onwards, with observations and anecdotes thrown in. They're all interesting, many are funny, and some of them have bursts of imagery that are really lovely. Overall, refreshing; poetry should be enjoyable and lively and personal, and this is all of those things.

By A. Hogg
Format:Paperback
My own poetic creativity might just be rekindled today after a very long sleep. I've only read a few of the poems in this book so far but the poem called "Rats" has found a dark little corner of my mind to sit in... probably until the end.

The simple imagery of rats in a cage tearing random "words" from their newspaper and those random words becoming subtle and almost shoulder-shrugging metaphors, hides well what was surely a 'Eureka' moment of observation and creativity.

The idea of the rats "sleeping in the Guardian" is great! It made me come up with the idea of portions of fish and chips being kept warm by the Sun :)
