5.0 out of 5 stars Uisge Beatha or Anglicised as Whisky Praised The World Round In Poem And Song And Story, 26 Nov 2007
This review is from: A Little Book of Malt Whiskies (The pleasures of drinking) (Hardcover)
Apart from the many other creations that Scots gave to the World like the steam engine, the telephone, the television, etc etc and to the English their bank we gave whisky. Malts are to me the best of whisky drinks but not an Islay malt, a good Speyside malt will do lovely. Nine or ten of them is quite enough otherwise it degenerates into drinking as the old man said. I think also incidentally connected with that that there may be two reasons why our Calvinist brethren do not entertain shall we say their wives when they are standing up.One is that it looks too much like dancing and the other may be that in fact they cannot stand up in more ways than one if they are given tae a secret drap o the cratur as we say in Scotland. That is one of the many unfortunate side effects of this great drink. However in moderation it is a most enjoyable palliative for any number of worldly woes.In this little volume Derek Cooper has provided us with a fine little tour of our more famous whiskies and my only cavill is that a bottle of Macallan the malt does not come with it.Ah weeel I suppose I can drown my sorrows on that score so to speak for it is a welcome addition to the copious literature on the subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introductory to malt production and some producers, 31 May 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Little Book of Malt Whiskies (The pleasures of drinking) (Hardcover)
This little book contains a very good summary for the layman of malt whisky production and details on some 24 producers. It is especially good for anyone who will be in Scotland and has the chance to visit a distillery. The book is truly "little", it is 6" x 4" and 60 pages long; it fits in a pocket perfectly for travelling and makes a good companion while in Scotland.
