There's an old saying and a song: 'You can't judge a book by looking at the cover'. Well, in this case you can. The title, along with the cover photograph of a young hand over an old hand, really tells you all you need to know.
The book comprises pieces centred around thoughts like 'Acceptance', 'Dealing with Exhaustion' and 'Reflections'. A short extract from each of these is highlighted. In the case of the first, for example, the extract reads 'Resisting the changes in your circumstances is like swimming against the tide. Go with the flow and you will travel further.'
Most of it, therefore, is good common-sense and wise, homespun philosophy. Except that I do happen to know that every word of this book has been hard won through the author's own lifetime experiences. She is a full-time carer and a dedicated one. All this she has achieved despite coping with health problems of her own and the difficulties brought by advancing years. Throughout, she has maintained her interest in many other things. Brenda Munitich is just about the most positive person I know.
Fortunately, my own experience as a carer has been strictly limited. I hope it remains so. But, if my personal circumstances change, I shall know where to turn for advice and inspiration.
