More About the Author

Anaïs Nin (1903-1977) was born in Paris and aspired at an early age to be a writer. An influential artist and thinker, she wrote primarily fiction until 1964, when her last novel, Collages, was published. She wrote The House of Incest, a prose-poem (1936), three novellas collected in The Winter of Artifice (1939), short stories collected in Under a Glass Bell (1944), and a five-volume continuous novel consisting of Ladders to Fire (1946), Children of the Albatross (1947), The Four-Chambered Heart (1950), A Spy in the House of Love (1954), and Seduction of the Minotaur (1961). These novels were collected as Cities of the Interior (1974). She gained commercial and critical success with the publication of the first volume of her diary (1966); to date, fifteen diary volumes have been published. Her most commercially successful books were her erotica published as Delta of Venus (1977) and Little Birds (1979). Today, her books are appearing digitally, most notably with the anthology The Portable Anais Nin (2011).

3.0 out of 5 stars Read Delta of Venus first... 15 Mar 2008
By Roman Clodia TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
... as this is the second volume in all senses, not least as the lesser in terms of writing. Having said that it is still almost unique as an exploration of female sexuality encompassing the taboo and the almost perverse but in a way that is exhilerating rather than exploitative.

I've only given it three stars because it doesn't keep to the high standard of Delta of Venus which is intoxicating for both its breadth and its glittering, perfumed prose.

This reads like a second pick by the publishers in light of the success of the first book. Still an excellent, mind-expanding read, just not as good as the first...

3.0 out of 5 stars Little Birds 24 July 2009
Format:Paperback
Delta of Venus is the better book in my opinion but, nonetheless, this is another excellent book.

2.0 out of 5 stars The opposite of tame 22 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
You would be forgiven for thinking perhaps that one of the first published female writers of this genre would be a little tame, reserved, or timid. This collection of short stories is anything but tame, and for me personally, a little too much.
Good use of the english language though.

2.0 out of 5 stars Paper cover really low quality 9 July 2012
By xellpan
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Delivery was bad - it took more than two weeks to reach destination, and delivery fee was expensive for such service - and when I open the envelope I discover a really bad quality paper cover (not plastified, literally plane hard paper printed in bad quality). Quite disappointed with this purchase.
