Product Description

These 5 Litre plastic Demi-Johns are made from clear food grade polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which is an ideal material as it will not add any unwanted flavours or odours to the contents. They are supplied with a cap which is pre drilled with a grommet ready to accomodate an airlock. We recommend that you do not overfill these as the fermenting yeast will produce a froth which if overflows will cause an unsightly mess and may even assist in contaminating the brew.If you are new to brewing then view our "How to Brew Beer guide"

I bought these because I couldn't afford glass - believing glass to be superior so felt I was making a necessary compromise. Serendipity - these are fantastic!

Used in conjunction with clingfilm (another plastic!) you have immense versatility. The wider apperture makes them easier to clean. Putting clingfilm over this before screwing down the lid makes an excellent seal. Puncture this with your bubble trap - the seal is often still good - else use a smidgen of vaseline on the groove in the grommet and replace. But it's after fermentation this product comes into its own when degassing your wine!

Seal with clingfilm again but squeeze out the air before tightening down the screwcap. Now shake until it blows out to its original dimensions. Unscrew the cap slightly - no pressure to contain! - and squeeze out the gas in a controlled fashion before tightening again. You keep doing this until the wine is degassed and there's no mess on the ceiling!

For red wines wrap in silver foil. These are brilliant!

Addendum - of course, you can get these from your local supermarket for £1 and you get 5l of mineral water thrown in for free. Worth considering!

Different from Glass 23 Dec 2010
Plastic demijohns are useful in areas where glass is not. This is cheaper lighter and less fagile than glass but it may not be as cleanable. Did think I might be able to collapse it when not in use, but not possible. At/towards to end of fermentation gas can be squeezed out, container sealed, and degree of gas production guaged after a week or so without fear of accident. Similarly air can be taken off if, say, only four and a half litres to be finished.

Poor product.. I know they are only cheap but at the end of the day save yourself some money just get a plastic container as this is use the normal cap with it, cut a hole big enougth to put an air lock in it and just seal with superglue. I ended up getting 4 gallon water containers from work and did just that .
