Essential for any undergraduate student of english literature! I had the second edition throughout my degree and used it near-constantly. What this book does is to take complicated theoretical terms and explain them simply and without recourse to academic arcana. It is by no means the only book you will ever need, but is an excellent starting point to the stormy seas of lit. theory and criticism.

I found this book to be invaluable through my A-level course and further on, through my degree. It is equally good to use as a dictionary style reference book, or a general revision of literary criticism terms. It is excellently written, with examples from literature and poetry, to aid your understanding in a more thorough manner.
