For me there are problems with this product. It looks great but let me down badly.
The big selling point is the built-in, patented burnware: EZ-DUB with the simple push button controls on the Writer. In order for this button function to work EZ-DUB `finder' software has to be installed on the host PC. This enables the PC to link with the push button facility in the writer. The installation disk includes Nero 7 essentials - a cut down verion of Nero 7 with 30 day limits on some facilitites and other Nero facilities missing. I decided not to insatll that as I have a full, later verion of Nero. I cliked on 'Install Ez-Dub' but Oh Dear: a message appears 'please intall Nero 7 essentials first' I did not want to do this as I have a later, full version of Nero. Relucantly I clicked on 'Install Nero 7 essentials' and of course as usual with Nero, I was told that other versions would be de-insatlled. This is a ridiculous condition of installation of Ez-Dub because de-installing a later, full verion of Nero means losing all the facilitiies of that version and replacing it with an ealrier, time limited version. The writer I purchased was manufactured in July 09, well after Nero 8 and 9 became available.
The EZ-Dub software on the provided disc will not install on my Vista machine (and the three other Vista machines I tried it on). The installation process hangs and takes up all the CPU capacity. Until the installation process is ended in Task Manager the PC is almost useless. The software disc says `Vista Ready', - but the bugs have not been ironed out. Liteon email help finally advised re-installing my Operating Program! A drastic and unreasonable request as no other program I have installed as 'Vista ready' has failed to install. The writer will work (using Nero) without the Ez-DUB software but only as a conventional writer/burner, but then then what is the point of buying the drive? It installs OK under XP but the next problem is present with XP:
EZ-DUB mishandles DVD 9 DL (Double layer) disc information. When prepared files are dragged and dropped for burning, the EZ-DUB software decides that the files are too large to fit on a DVD (9) DL disc when they are most definitely not! The indicator bar shows that the files are under the max capacity but the software says `too large to burn , remove some files'. File properties in Explorer show that the fiels are not too large and Nero will burn the same files with disk space left. There is no way round this problem and so, at least in my case, EZ-DUB will only burn single so I can hardly recommend this product. A good idea but I think it has been launched with unsorted bugs. There is no phone help from Liteon, only email support which is wooden and not my idea of decent support.
