Product Description

New York Times

It's exactly like a VCR, except you use blank DVD's instead of tapes

Manufacturer's Description

Are you still struggling to choose between a +RW/+R and a RW/-R DVD Recorder? If you are, LITEON is here to help you sort the problem. The award winning LVW-5005 DVD Dual recorder provides the best ever solution to end the suffering in choice making. The LVW-5005 is able to record onto DVD media of all formats, including +RW/+R and RW/-W. The LVW-5005 differs from other recorders as not only will it record DVD formats, it also allows you to use standard blank CD media (CD-R/RW) to record audio in the audio CD format (Audio CD), or record video in VCD or SVCD format (VCD/SVCD).

Fuss-Free DVD Playing/Recording:
The LITEON LVW-5005 DVD Dual recorder distinguishes itself from most of its competitors in the market with compatibility with all DVD formats. This feature not only enhances convenience in DVD recording but also higher compatibility in playback on other players since you can play the recorded DVDs on nearly all DVD media players. Key to any recorder whether it be video or DVD is ease of use and the LVW-5005 doesn't disappoint. The unique Easy Guider OSD guides you through the process of recording on a step-by-step basis. This graphic-based guide enhances fuss-free recording and is suitable for users aged from 9 to 99.

Up to Six Hours' Scheduled Recording:
Another feature worth mentioning is the huge capacity of schedule recording. A blank DVD can usually store up to 4.7GB, which is seven times more than the capacity of CD. So recording on DVD assures longer recording time; giving up to six hours of recording on a single disc. In addition, it saves a great deal of time since there is no need to change disks so frequently.

DV-Link Makes Remote DV Control Possible:
The LVW-5005 has a DV-Link (IEEE1394/FireWire) port located under a hidden flap on the front of the player along side analogue video input ports. The DV-Link allows you to connect LVW-5005 to a FireWire compatible Camcorder and transfer captured footage direct to DVD in high quality digital. So you'll never miss a precious moment. Also, the LVW-5005 remote control can control some camcorders.

There's been loads of waffle about DVD recorders being the replacement for VHS recorders, and until now, I've not believed a word of it. However, I really believe that the LVW5005 could replace your VHS recorder (it has mine). Why? Well, the LVW5005 will record on either DVD+R or DVD-R discs so there's no confusion when it comes to buying discs. Think of it being able to record on VHS and BETA. In addition to this, whack in a blank CD-R or RW and the machine will recognise the media type and record in VCD or SVCD format.. OK, not as high a quality as DVD, but great for recording EastEnders or Songs of Praise cos the media is soooo cheap..

But what will swing it for most people is the 'guider' button. Press this on the remote and it'll guide you through the recording/playback process by giving you super-large icons to select. It is the best navigation I've seen on a player or recorder - and I've seen a few.

Also, its worth noting that this recorder can be made multi-region with a few presses on the remote control. Also, I upgraded the firmware on my machine (a simple download from the manufacturer's site and then burnt onto a CDR) and I now have a 3hour recording time too.

A bit miffed I paid over £200 for mine from a.n.other retailer. But hey, the price of having something as soon as it hit the shops.

I purchased this recorded about 2 months ago, to transfer VHS recordings to DVD.

I dont know why a couple of users have found it difficult to set-up, it took about 5 mins to get it going !

Plus Points

1. Simple setup
2. Writes/Reads DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW standards (and VCD etc)
3. Simple menu options
4. Easy Guider - they could not make this easier !!!
5. Has worked with a load of different disc brands. Imation/Samsung etc.
6. Good picture and sound quality

The bad points...

1. No NICAM off TV tuner (not a problem as we record off scart !)

To address other points, the fan noise is actually very low, yes it noisier than a VCR, but they dont have fans ! No playback output via the RF output... Please why watch DVD if you dont use the scart output.

All in all this is a great buy, its at a good price, simple to use, great picture quality, and supports multiple disc formats...

It does everything you could want. It records terrestrial TV from it's inbuilt tuner, digital channels from it's SCART in socket from my freeview box, converts VHS to DVD via it's AV inputs and has the most easy to use menu system I've ever used. Did I forget to mention the firewire port on the front too for dropping your home movies straight to disk?
If you are planning to buy a DVD recorder without a hard drive, make sure it's this one.
