I purchased this drive as a portable storage solution and also for CD burning.
The first thing I noticed is that the drive is larger than it appears in the pictures being both wider and deeper. It is still portable but is definitely not slimline and would not fit into my laptop case.
The packaging is neat but the quick installation guide is deficient. It assumes that the user already has a PCMCIA USB 2 card. Using the USB 1 port alone it is not possible to install the software as there are no Windows 98 USB 1 Drivers for the USB cable on the enclosed floppy and if they were any on the CD ROM disc they could not be recognised. Thus I spent hours trying to install the software and looking for drivers. This is a BIG deficiency of both the quick installation guide and the CD Rom help. The correct drivers were provided only after e-mailing Lite-on technical support. After this installation was fairly standard and the device worked well. I was able to burn one CD which came out very clear though slow! However the buffer was running at 98% capacity throughout and the burn process was quite tedious. Also it was very memory intensive and you need at least 128MB of Ram and ideally some spare i.e close all other programs! The drive was quite quiet during operation and hitch free.
In conclusion the product is good at what it does but the set up process was very frustrating and I was on the verge of returning it. It is very slow with the USB 1 port and to really get the best from it you would probably need the PCMCIA USB 2 Bus. This would eliminate the setup problems as the floppy has the USB 2 drivers. I marked the product down for this reason. Otherwise it would have been 4 stars. It would also be better for laptop users if it had a tummy tuck to slim it down a bit. Some buttons for separate use as a stand-alone CD player would be a bonus. Those changes would give the drive maximum points.

I purchased this CD-RW and experienced similar problems to everyone else reguarding the installing process. There are indeed no USB 1 drivers on the supplied disk, as mentioned by another reviewing customer. (Thank goodness it wasn't just me!) I was on the verge of sending it back for that very reason, but spoke to Lite-on technical support and we got it going in the end.
I don't feel that it is as slow as some people are saying, but I am only comparing this CD-RW to my father's older one! It does make quite a lot of noise whilst burning, which sounds as though it might take off at some point, and it is a lot smaller than the packaging initially suggests! I have been relatively pleased with this CD-RW, although it was out of stock on this site, so I got mine elsewhere. I use it with a laptop, but it does seem to be a lot more portable compared to others. My laptop is stationary more than often and I chose this CD-RW sheerly for it's compactness and looks. It can be a bit awkward trying to eject the CD-Rs sometimes, but with about 3 or 4 different ways of getting it to eject, I always manage to get what I want in the end.
If you want an external CD-RW that is good value for money, reliable, does the job and looks unique, then this is probably the one for you.
