5.0 out of 5 stars Great help, for players, not storytellers., 22 Oct 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Litany of the Tribes: 3 (Werewolf: The Apocalypse) (Paperback)
Of the tribe books, this compilation is probably my favourite, with vol 2 coming a close second. The Red Talon section is actually useful for any Lupus characters, as it provides an insight into the ways Lupus characters think and feel. Many players play Lupus as either humans with four legs or well trained dogs, neither of which is appropriate.
The Shadow lord book explains the goals and values of the tribe. I could never understand how the other tribes could stand the Shadowlords, but this book reveals all. Shadowlords aren't really as malevolant as most people believe - they simply respect power and strength. If a leader has the power to maintain his position and rules well, they will serve him loyally. If, however, he is weak or ineffective, then he has to be brought down. And, of course, the shadowlords will be sure to 'test' the leader every now and again...
The silent striders book, is probably the weakest of the three, but still a great help for players. Most of the book is concerned with their history, with a bit on their society, what little of it exists. Of greatest use here is probably the gifts, especially the one that leads a silent strider straight for the nearest hornets nest to stick his nose into...
This compliation is great for players, and provides a ST with help for portraying NPCs, but they don't provide many story ideas or useful characters (the famous characters section isn't really helpful). Still, that isn't really what its for, so I say it still gets the 5 stars (don't complain that a hammer doesn't make a good axe...).

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a look in some areas..., 15 Oct 2001

This review is from: Litany of the Tribes: 3 (Werewolf: The Apocalypse) (Paperback)
In the continuing vein of the other "Litany of the Tribes" books, this book is a compilation of 3 tribebooks. In this case, the Red Talons, the Shadow Lords and the Silent Striders. As such, I'll break this review into 3, one for each tribe.

1) The Red Talons - In my opinion, the best tribebook in this compilation. Since they have no human blood in their tribe, the entire book is written from a wolfish perspective lending a sort of savage, primitive grace to it.

2)The Shadow Lords - To be honest,I've never liked these guys and as a result I've docked the rating a bit. The writing seems to ooze with malevolence actually and this twists the overall feel to something I didn't enjoy.Granted they're meant to be sneaky,I just didn't enjoy it.

3)The Silent Striders- Some very nice history and background on the Garou can be found here along with some interesting folk-lore.This book helps you understand and pity this tribe for what they must endure, being such creatures of wanderlust.Well written overall but no outstanding pieces here.

To sum up, this book just makes the cut to above-average, mostly due to the Red Talon tribebook. All 3 of the books start with the traditional comic as well. If you need more background for your group's Garou, then I'd recommend this book.
