‘Searing. . . A book that lassos you, hogties your emotions and won't let you go. . . Chronicles with searching intelligence, humor and grace the author's slow, sometimes exhilarating, sometimes painful discovery of her vocation and her voice as a poet and writer.’ Michiko Kakutani, New York Times

‘A brutally honest, sparkling story.’ Glamour

‘Dazzling. . . Lit reminds us not only how compelling personal stories can be, but how, in the hands of a master, they can transmute into the highest art.’ Boston Globe

‘Scrappy, gut-wrenching, irresistible. [Written] with trademark wit, precision, and unfailing courage.’ Pam Houston, O Magazine

‘Karr could tell you what's on her grocery list, and its humor would make you bust a gut. She holds the position of grande dame memoirista.’ Samantha Dunn, Los Angeles Times

‘An absolute gem that secures Karr's place as one of the best memoirists of her generation. . . [She] writes with a singular combination of poetic grace and Texan verve.’ Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

In this, her third autobiographical book, Mary Karr details her suffering, and recovery from, alcohol abuse. Not to mention her relationship issues, both with her husband and mother. In a brutally frank narrative that is as gripping as it is moving she shows anyone who is in her position that there is hope. It's a must for anyone who's been through the same rocky trip, obviously, but the power of her writing is such that it makes for an enthralling read for everyone else. Those not religiously inclined (like me) might find the closing chapters, and Mary's slow conversion to the power of God, a little hard to take, but that's what worked for her, so I admire her honesty.

My one beef is that, a little like the last memoir, there are stylistic devices that sometimes just irritate. For instance, it's all written in the present tense, which does, on occasions, bring out the immediacy of the events. But there are no speech marks either, which renders a few passages a little confusing in terms of what is reported speech and what is narrative. I'll be glad when this fashionable, but lazy and idiotic, trend has passed, and people start writing clear English again. However, it doesn't spoil the book, which I would recommend, especially to those enthralled by the first memoir (The Liar's Club) but a mite disappointed by the second (Cherry).
