78 of 80 people found the following review helpful By Conor J Farrington on 24 Oct. 2003

Some composers seem to be fairly immune to damage by bad interpretations. If you hear a Mozart sonata played by a mediocre pianist, it is still possible to discern the greatness of the music. Other composers seem to rely much more heavily on the genius of the interpreter, so that a bad performance of a given work makes the work itself sound second-class.
Liszt belongs firmly in the second category - more so, I think, than any other major composer. To hear the great Sonata in B Minor played by Martha Argerich is to hear a different Sonata to the one played by Alfred Brendel; and both of these interpretations seem to me to fall far short of doing justice to Liszt's masterpiece for piano. I have given these two names as examples, but I can think of many more famous pianists whose interpretations of Liszt have done more harm than good. A consequence of this is the stereotype of Liszt as a charlatan, a producer of dazzling effects, a composer with no real substance.
For me, Bolet is the only pianist whose interpretations of Liszt present us with the best possible view of the music - a view of the music in which Liszt literally stands revealed as a composer of the highest possible distinction. In the Sonata, for instance, Bolet steers clear of Brendel's ponderous approach, while at the same time eschewing Argerich's destructive wilfulness. His tempi are always precise and consistent, shaping the work as Liszt must have intended, and Bolet always finds an equilibrium between weighty intellectual concerns and Liszt's affecting lyricism.
In the Annees de Pelerinage, IIme Annee, Bolet gives us a taste of the sun-soaked, ancient Italy imagined and immortalised by Liszt's peerless creations.

Although many don't find Liszt to be their cup of tea, few can deny that he pushed piano composition and performance to new hieghts. This collection of 9 discs captures the best of a composer who writes with power, virtuosity and above all beauty. Bolet's playig is magnificent throughout, who would have guessed he recorded this series well into his sixties? His playing truly gives the Mesmeric Bminor sonata justice, unlike so many other performers. Instead of treating Liszt's more technical works as exercises, as many performers do, Bolet brings out the beauty of liszt and treats the virtuosity as a matter of fact instead of the main feature. Well worth a listen even if you are not a Lisztian.

Format: Audio CD
Franz Liszt (1811-1886) wrote over 1200 pieces of music for the piano, enough for 200 CD's. Here, we have 9 CD's of this great music, and it must be said that not all of his music is of equal merit. The reason why Liszt's music for the piano is so good is because he was a great pianist and a great sight-reader. He knew how to exploit the full potential of his instrument of choice.
Jorge Bolet's playing is extraordinary. He admired, and even revered, Rachmaninov, and he adopted much of his style. He is a true virtuoso in his technique, and the music of Liszt best displays this.
This collection of 9 CD's is indeed a rare treat to listen to. The first CD is a collection of Liszt's most popular works. The third disc displays Bolet's great talent with the Sonata in B minor (1853). I could go on, but I think you get the picture... ...this is a remarkable collection that brings together a great composer's great music for the piano and the inspirational playing of Bolet.

These Bolet performances are simply heaven and have a luxuriance which is hard to fault.

He achieves, I think, a perfect balance between the dramatic rhetoric; poetic/romantic; and spiritual/religious inherent in Liszt's musical character, and balance, I think, is everything in Liszt.

My personal favourites would have to be the Schubert song transcriptions. This is perhaps revealing. In a way I think that Liszt is at his best working with other composer's ideas, particularly Verdi. Claudio Arrau / Phillips.

Sorry if this makes me a bit of a traitor.
