I had to write a review of this CD purely to try and discredit the only other UK review, which is unfairly negative.
Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies are fantastic pieces of music, though they have taken me sometime to "get into". I bought this collection many years ago, and I must admit that except for the extremely famous 2nd Rhapsody, none of the the others really did it for me. Fast forward a few years, now a much more experienced and knowledgeable classical music listener I gave them another listen and was amazed. Since then I have become a Liszt fan, and am continuing to expand my Liszt collection all the time.
I think my previous failure to enjoy these pieces was probably due to impatience - the typical form of a Hungarian Rhapsody is slow-fast, and my youthful-self probably got bored of waiting for each piece to liven up... But the slow-fast form is marvellous, as the slow section almost hypnotises you into a trance-like state and then the fast section hits you and puts a huge smile on your face.
As for the performance, I think it is absolutely flawless. I have listened to other interpretations since and prefer this one by miles. The playing is clear and never rushed, and I have no idea what the other reviewer means by "he tries so hard to sound Hungarian" - I think this is a very silly thing to say.
I would recommend this CD not only to any lover of Liszt's music, but especially to anyone who is trying to learn to appreciate this great composer.
