I had to write a review of this CD purely to try and discredit the only other UK review, which is unfairly negative.
Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies are fantastic pieces of music, though they have taken me sometime to "get into". I bought this collection many years ago, and I must admit that except for the extremely famous 2nd Rhapsody, none of the the others really did it for me. Fast forward a few years, now a much more experienced and knowledgeable classical music listener I gave them another listen and was amazed. Since then I have become a Liszt fan, and am continuing to expand my Liszt collection all the time.
I think my previous failure to enjoy these pieces was probably due to impatience - the typical form of a Hungarian Rhapsody is slow-fast, and my youthful-self probably got bored of waiting for each piece to liven up... But the slow-fast form is marvellous, as the slow section almost hypnotises you into a trance-like state and then the fast section hits you and puts a huge smile on your face.
As for the performance, I think it is absolutely flawless. I have listened to other interpretations since and prefer this one by miles. The playing is clear and never rushed, and I have no idea what the other reviewer means by "he tries so hard to sound Hungarian" - I think this is a very silly thing to say.

I would recommend this CD not only to any lover of Liszt's music, but especially to anyone who is trying to learn to appreciate this great composer.

Roberto Szidon's recording of the complete Hungarian Rhapsodies dates from 1973 but remains the very finest in the catalogue. He was a very fine pianist who recorded far too little and this set is his greatest memorial. His approach is very different from that of more histrionic pianists like Cziffra. He plays the music 'as written' with perfect technical skill and the result is an eminently satisfying set.

I greatly enjoy other recordings of the Rhapsodies (or selections from them) by such as Bolet, Brendel and Pizzaro but these interpretations are better than any others I know and ideal for repeated listening. It might be paradoxical but the set as a whole is more exciting than more overtly virtuosic interpretations. These compositions have, for some, a low place amongst Liszt's piano works. Roberto Szidon makes the best possible case for them to be included amongst the finest of the mid nineteenth century.

The late analogue DG recording is very fine and the booklet notes very informative. A definitive issue and an essential purchase

This set, well recorded in 1972, conveniently brings together all the Hungarian Rhapsodies plus the Spanish Rhapsody in one double CD package. It has been in my collection since the LP version and now this is the second CD set. It was bought on the basis that it might bring the sort of improvement that I have experienced in the 24 bit remastering by various other makes.

The vague term 'original image bit processing' was meaningless to me but reading other reviewers and magazine articles there seems to be considerable doubt about the value of this form of remastering carried out by DGG.

The good news is that the damage reported by other reviewers with this type of remastering in terms of artificial balances, changed perspectives and unpleasant tonal quality is not apparent in this set.

However, after very careful A/B comparisons I cannot detect any more than a possible and faint increase of tonal warmth but an equally possible but faint lack of percussive bite. This is on reference playback equipment that can only be described as extreme. I therefore feel fairly confident that there will be little or no significant improvement or other difference between this 'original bit processing' version and its predecessor when using normal playback equipment. (*See comment below for a further description of the potential sound improvement).

Therefore, in terms of considering this as an upgrade, I would suggest that it is a very doubtful investment.

As regards the performances, they are simply superb. Szidon plays these showy works absolutely straight without any additives. He has a towering technique and delivers a firm and rhythmically decisive bass line upon which he is able to make the most of the glittering top lines.

A truly excellent analogue recording of 1973 with consistency throughout all tracks. Roberto Szidon presents great virtuosity in every performance and is a true virtuoso. It is difficult to find another product to match.
