This selection of Hungarian Rhapsodies is from Cziffra's 1970s recording. His first recording dates from the late 1950s and is still available. Cziffra's Hungarian gypsy background makes him the perfect pianist for these flamboyantly fiery works which he performs with tremendous panache and abandon. His phenomenal virtuosity means he can lose himself in the spirit and character of the music without any concern for the many technical obstacles. If I have a slight preference for his 1950s recordings it is because I feel he plays the quieter lyrical moments with more expressive tenderness. However his playing here especially of the Hungarian Rhapsodies No.2,6,8 'Capriccio,' and 9 'Carnaval in Pesth,' are simply jaw-dropping.

brought it because heard one of the Rhapsodies recently at a concert so brought the cd....absolutely cannot remember anything exceptional about it...heard them all before...so I suppose this is just an average sort of performance....
