I found this book excellent for getting to grips with the area of gaining an understanding of children's views. It is well written and explains theory and practice in a way that is ideal for busy professionals and practitioners.
The Mosaic Approach starts with the obvious but sometimes overlooked fact that children are experts on their own lives. It is a good antidote to some of the less well thought through practice in the area of children's participation. The authors don't claim that the approach is a simple solution to the ethical dilemmas that exist in this area, but they do provide a helpful framework for listening (in the broadest sense of the word listening) that can support the gathering of evidence through a variety of methods.
The approach has been developed for young children (pre school) but can certainly be adapted for use with older children. It will be useful for those in nurseries, schools, and residential settings who are working to improve the strength of children's voices and children's participation.
