This wonderful little book has clarified for me so many things which I had not understood about the two different traditions within Christianity, the way of the authoriatarian and prohibitive Roman church as against the more inclusive and panentheisitic way of the Celtic Church. The former follows St Peter and the latter the more mystical St John who was close to the heartbeat of Jesus. The Celtic church, which was tragically ousted by the church of Rome at the Synod of Whitby, saw God in all living things, and celebrated the God-given gifts of sexuality, sensuality, the wonders of creation, and the equality of men and women. The teachings of Pelagius were gentle, good, and able to see truth in other faiths as well as Christianity. He did not believe in original sin, but rather that the image of God is seen in a newborn baby. God is in our depths and without Him we could not exist for one minute, and His life can be released in us. I have felt for years profoundly uncomfortable about the doctrine of original sin, which just didn't ring true for me, or the idea that Christians had a monopoly on the truth. Surely God is big enough to love everyone and everything He has made. And the dichotomy between matter, seen as bad (hence anything to do with our bodies is sinful) and spirit as good, which the church has tended to believe for centuries, is surely wrong. Matter is beautiful and God is in it, as He is in all creation. This is not pantheism but panentheism. God's whole meaning is love. This book should be read by all ordinands and church leaders everywhere. It is full of hope, and beauty, and is the way the church should be going.

This short book by J. Philip Newell is proably the best short introduction to Celtic Spirituality and its history out there.

Written from an enlightened crossdenomnational viewpoint, Newell succeeds in delineating the unique aspects of a spirituality suppressed until very recently by Roman Catholic and Protestant orthodoxies.

Highly recommendable.
