A new release from Marc Cohn is always welcome - the man crafts songs perfectly and then takes them out on the road, re-assembles them in many and varied ways and performs them effortlessly live.

1970 is a peek into Marc's influences and he shares with us some of the songs, singers and songwriters who inspired him back in his teenage years. So we dont get any original Cohn tunes, but we do get lovely reworkings of songs by Paul Simon, JJ Cale, Paul McCartney & so on.

Its a lovely album - ideal for that lazy Sunday morning or a cool summer afternoon of the kind we've been lucky to have in the UK this year - I cant wait to hear some new material from Marc or indeed perhaps a long awaited gig in the UK

Recommendation - buy it - find a nice shady spot, put the needle on the record & chill out

To say I am a huge fan of Marc Cohn would be a vast understatement, so it comes with much sadness that I have to say this album left me feeling rather flat. Saying that, Cohn produces music of such a high calibre this still has plenty to recommend it for and it makes a wonderful lazy day background music album.

This is a concept album in as much as Marc covers songs from 1970 that have inspired him musically and whilst he manages to perform them in a very polished and accomplished way, this seems to be lacking some of the emotion from his own compositions. Of course you get his superb voice and musicianship, but I feel he sounds best when performing his own music (and he is truly an exceptional song writer) and this album never comes close. After the amazing `Join the Parade' we know he is still capable of writing music that stirs the spirit and makes us soar, but I only hope the gestation period between albums isn't as long this time and we get an album of fresh material very soon. This is worth getting for die hard fans, but definitely get his other albums first if you are new to Marc Cohn, I guarantee you won`t be disappointed.

Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

Marc Cohn has made a wonderful record out of some of his favorite tunes from 1970. His voice and the melodies are in the center with not more than necessary instruments around it. It's a record to listen close to as well as to enjoy while just relaxing or preparing dinner. And this is a record I'm going to listen to for a long time coming, and probably always will return to!
