Orphaned, widowed and a single mother by the age of 20, Lena Manning survives her hardships with the loving help and support of her congregation, especially the pastor and his wife. When it is time for the pastor to retire, Lena has to leave her employment with him, as the replacement pastor is a handsome widower with young twin daughters, just a little older than Lena's daughter Jackie. On reading this you will think that the story line is all mapped out now, but things are not as simple as that. Lena has to make a choice between two worlds, the safety of the village and congregation she has known all her life and the temptations of a wealthy man offering the delights of New York and the priviledges of money. Lena has feelings for both men in different ways. In the end it is the wisdom of her friends that help her to recognise what is in her heart.

HASH(0x9a56dc60) out of 5 stars enjoyed it 25 Jun. 2012

I enjoyed this book. It's an easy-going read. Liked the characters. I think it's supposed to be based back in the 20's - 40's...you know the era is of days-gone-by, but I couldn't really identify the time frame. Some of the story line is kind of week, but I was able to get past it because I always wanted to know what happened next. The entire story reflects a simpler time, although the plot is about the main character (a young, widowed mother) is torn between two very different men - a modest pastor and a rich cripple (who is also a morphine addict...but she doesn't know that). Cute story.

HASH(0x9a3e6510) out of 5 stars Ms Lake's best yet 17 Dec. 2010

In post World-War-I New Jersey, a young widow struggles to provide the best life for her infant daughter while being courted by a small town minister and a rich New York socialite.

I was privileged to be a beta reader of this novel and consider it Margaret Lake's best work.

HASH(0x9a3e7a14) out of 5 stars Well written and very romantic. 29 Mar. 2013

Lena Manning is left a widow when her husband is killed in WWII. She is young and pregnant with only her Mother-in-law for family. Unfortunately the news of hers son's death causes a stroke and Lena is the one left to care for her. The day she dies Lena gowes into early hard labor and almost dies giving birt to her child.
The characters feel like real people and the plot holds your attention. This is a well written and very romantic story.
