Product Description

'Listen to Keep' is the third solo album by former Idlewild singer Roddy Woomble. Following 2011's 'The Impossible Song & Other Songs' and his cult-classic solo debut 'My Secret Is My Silence' (2006). 'Listen To Keep' features eleven new songs written and recorded with his new band at An Tobar on the Isle of Mull. Roddy Woomble's naturally poetic writing and consistent touring have won him many thousands of fans all over the world. "Listen To Keep" is another great recording packed with memorable melodies and powerful, artistic expression. Roddy Woomble is widely regarded as one of Scotland's finest songwriters. His band - Seonaid Aitken (violin, piano, vocals), Gavin Fox (bass), Danny Grant (drums), Sorren Maclean (guitar, vocals) help create the perfect backdrop for his poetic lyrics, blending touches of country and folk to a set of poignant songs. "Listen To Keep" is released on March 4th 2013 on Reveal Records.

In some respects I have a lot to thank Roddy Woomble for. Not only has he made some great music over the years that I have enjoyed immensely, but through him I came across Chris Drever, LAU and John McCusker, and the pleasure I have had from their music has been immense. Also, after going to a concert and hearing him talk warmly of the late Bert Jansch he opened up another musical avenue that I have enjoyed exploring. I don’t want to sound too gushing, but in all honesty he has probably done more to expand and enrich my musical tastes than any one else. So in reviewing Woomble’s latest album I have to admit that I am a little biased towards writing good things.

This 2013 release is, I think Woomble’s third solo album, and once again is an instant classic. The album opens with the simply beautiful ‘Making Myths’, a gently told tale with a rich melancholic feel, and finishing with a classic instrumental break. On ‘The Last One Of My Kind’, Woomble opens the track with a fiddle, and has a very Country feel running through it. This started a discussion between myself and my wife about whether Woomble was trying to pay homage to Country music, or if this is a reminder that actually Country music’s roots are in the Gaelic and Celtic musical traditions that the settlers took over to America, and that Woomble is steeped in. I like to think that it is a bit of both. The title track is a dark and moody piece, that builds to a powerful crescendo. The rest of the tracks are equally excellent, and this is an album on which I like all the tracks and have no particular favourites as I have no particular tracks that I dislike.

Although recorded in Mull and with significant celtic twists and turns, my predominant feeling listening to this is that Roddy has been listening to early Wilco or more particularly the Jayhawks. This is NOT a criticism. I love the Jayhawks and this album is in no way derivative it is just this is the easiest (laziest?) comparison I can draw. Lyrically the songs have smooth melancholic beauty about them and Woomble is in fine voice. The band offer up fine support especially the excellent backing vocals from violinist Seonaid Aitken. It could be argued that there aren't many boundaries being pushed here but for me that is fine because if it ain't broke don't fix it and this is a work of subtle and tuneful excellence.

Another melodic and thoughtful album, which improves with every listen. Roddy and his band have produced a really impressive excellent follow up to 'Impossible Song...........' Highly recommended

Really like tracks 1,2,3 and 7, couple of ok tracks and a few mediocre ones, not as good as Roddys 2 previous solo efforts

I really like this CD, but not quite as much as The Impossible Song etc.. It doesn't seem as 'Scottish' to me, more 'Country' perhaps?
Listening again, as I review, and I must say it's growing on me!

I think 'My Secret Is My Silence' is one of the best albums ever made and this could be almost as good. Not quite as accessible to my ears as previous Woomble outings but I do have as aversion to country music, and this definitely errs that way. Stick with t, it's a grower
