Anyone in their mid to late twenties will remember the classic indie melancholic anthem 'Every beat of the heart'. This greatest hits takes you back to the days of shuffling on polytechnic dance floors in the north of england. You'll be surprised at how many of the tunes you recognise. The perfect album for lazy sunday mornings!

The Railway Children. What an absolutely rotten name for a band. No wonder they never got fame n fortune.

Listen On: The Best Of The Railway Children is an almost adequately but not greatly compiled overview of the band's later stuff (ie non-Factory, although there is the inclusion of the demo for A Gentle Sound, which is excellent).

I think the mistake this band made (apart from their name) was that they went from this kind of wistful folky Wigan vibe to too much of a pop band. Their Factory stuff was all pretty much excellent, but their stuff for the much more big business Virgin Records while mostly good, does occasionally veer into the arena of the jingly jangly, the plinky plonky and the downright twee. And too much of that's here. Like The Dream Academy, I mean like really nasty perspex folk that makes your teeth hurt. I can't listen to the radio when I eat my tea for this reason. Shame - if TRC'd stayed on Factory and not gone chasing fame they could have developed into a real legendary band.

Highlights here:

A Gentle Sound (demo - ace, sounds a bit like early James)

Every beat Of The Heart (ace, sounds unbelievably like New Order if new Order had been polytechnic students from Wigan. Superb from start to finish apart from some lame synthesised strings that kick in at 2'10" - I'll bet any money that when Factory A&R heard that cheesy breakdown they choked on their smoked salmon tagliatelle. In the hands of a better producer, this song could have owned.)

You're Young (sounds like Twisted Tenderness era Electronic this, except better?! Odd but very good)

I'm awarding this compilation four stars for the above songs alone, because they're all ace tunes. But I'm afraid the rest of the compilation is dated and disappointing.

If you're a first time TRC buyer, I'd direct you towards Reunion Wilderness instead, which is excellent.
