Book Description

Jan 1971
I had a grenade in my hand. So, no doubt, did the English private. I tore out the pin with my teeth. Lay there and counted. Twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three, twenty-four...It is Hitler's last chance to save The Third Reich...Millions of Allied troops have landed in Normandy. The orders are clear: Sven and his comrades, hardened by a savage war that has led them from the bloody steppes of the Russian Front, to the slopes of Monte Cassino, are ordered to withdraw to Strasbourg and destroy Paris on the way...

About the Author

Born in 1917 in Fredensborg, Denmark, Sven Hassel joined the merchant navy at the age of 14. He did his compulsory year's military service in the Danish forces in 1936 and then, facing unemployment, joined the German army. He served throughout World War II on all fronts except North Africa. When the war ended in 1945 he was transferred between Russian, American and French prison camps, and upon returning to Denmark, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for treason. He began writing Legion of the Damned during his time as a prisoner of war. His fourteen World War II books, which draw on his own encounters and experiences as a soldier, have sold over 53 million copies worldwide and have been published in more than 50 countries. He peacefully passed away in Barcelona in 2012, where he had resided since 1964. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars He has done it again 4 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
I have now read 6 sven Hassel books, and Liquidate Paris has to be one of my favourites. It is set in France 1944-1945. Sven and his German comrades are in a desperate retreat from the slopes of Russia and now have to fight the oncoming allied invaders.
As all his books Hassel is not afraid to write about the bloody and gory battles, so be warned this book is not for the faint hearted.
This is not just a "boys" book. There is a lot of love and emotion in this book, and a great read for everyone.
I would definetly recommned this book to everyone. also all of Hassel's other masterpieces.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not his best 18 Mar 2014

With Sven you know what you get-nonstop blood and guts, not literary finesse.

But this is a bit incoherent: Tiny has changed his name; they are sometimes the old punishment battalion and sometimes elite Tiger tank crew; Sven has been partially blinded, but is sometimes a crack machine-gunner and sometimes a crack tank-gunner; Brits engage in suicidal human-wave attacks.

Back to the Eastern front please, where endless human wave attacks actually happened - no, the Brits and Yanks were too sensible to do that thing in Normandy.
