Product Description

The 2009 British and Irish Lions Tour of South Africa will go down as one of the great series. The three test matches between the World Champions and the most famous of all touring sides provided some of the greatest moments in recent rugby history.

The Springboks were hell bent on revenge after suffering series defeat to the Lions in 1997. The Lions were seeking their first tour victory since that triumph 12 years earlier.

The result was three matches of furious intensity and extraordinary drama.

The first test in Durban started with an explosion of South African points the hosts powering ahead before the Lions launched a magnificent comeback, almost snatching the game.

The second test in Pretoria will be remembered as one of the great matches. The Lions led from the start they dominated and should have won. They lost. Defeat due to the exceptional determination of the Boks and a last minute penalty from the halfway line Incredible.

So to Johannesburg and the final test. The home side set to claim a majestic clean sweep against what would surely be a beaten and bruised foe. Instead the Lions rose up in mighty defiance to deliver a performance full of courage, heart and flair. They stormed to a stirring triumph against all the odds to complete a quite sensational series.

The series might have been lost but McGeechan s class of 09 will not easily be forgotten.

Enjoy all three epic test matches in full in this Lions box set. Every moment from every test match all you will ever need as a permanent reminder of a classic series.

If you've never seen, or only seen highlights of the 2009 Lions 3-test series in South Africa you're missing a treat. The first two tests were classics - the ebb & flow between two hugely committed teams giving 100% created numerous moments that live long in the memory. The third test, given the series standing at the time, was understandably a step down but still a quality game. I watched it live at the time and thought that every player on the pitch did the Lions jersey & tradition proud - with Ian McGeechan back at the helm a major improvement on NZ 2005.

Onto the DVD's themselves - you get 4 DVDs - one each for the three tests plus the official tour match highlights DVD which I believe is also released elsewhere. Of the three test DVDs the ones for tests 1 & 2 are superb - pre-match head coach interviews, footage of the team buses arriving, bit of info on each player as the teamsheet is shown on screen, intelligent commentary, etc. The only omission is any post-match reaction. The 3rd test DVD is a step down in quality - kick-off to final whistle only with nothing pre or post match. Also included are some pointless extras comprising re-edited footage in the guise of Top Trys & Players. The final 'Official Tour Highlights' DVD contains (amazingly enough) highlights of all 10 tour games including the three tests.

There are no subtitles but as a major bonus the footage & commentary has been taken from the South African broadcaster so it DOES NOT, repeat DOES NOT feature the Sky Sports commentary team - believe me that's a good thing.

Overall opinion - as already stated the matches themselves & DVDs for test 1 and the pivotal test 2 are fantastic, but its disappointing that test 3 didn't get the same treatment. The tour highlights DVD is a bit pointless - the tests are already in the DVD set and there's just not enough footage of the warm up matches to see how each game developed and to show the progress of the tour party towards the test series. If this was a 3 disc 'tests only' set with an improved 3rd test DVD I'd give it 5 stars - one of the best series of recent years - but as it stands its only worth 4.

just got this for my birthday......the first disc is the match highlights that you get in the other box set and of course the 3rd test so really you are buying the 1st and second test.that said i have just watched the 1st test and didn't realise how close it really was ...although i knew the result it still made the hairs on my neck stand up looking at the effort put by the players and the masses of lions fans in the crowd ...although they were not very vociferous until the last third...it really was a great match ..

i look forward to the 2nd test then will treat myself to the third for the second time

if you look at it as 2 tests you may or may not have seen live ( i didn't )it could be seen as value for money ish if you had already bought the match highlights previous box set with all the mid week games and the third test

if you haven't bought that buy this its a winner
