The Artistry of Simba and Friends on Broadway, 17 Feb 1998

This review is from: The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway (Hardcover)
Of all Disney's popular animated movies, "The Lion King" seemed the least likely candidate for a stage production. Yet from the moment the "The Lion King" opened on Broadway, it began to draw both audiences and praise.
The credit for the production's huge success belongs to Julie Taymor, the award-winning director and designer who turned the most popular Disney movie of all time into a powerful and mesmerizing piece of performance art. Ms. Taymor provides a glimpse into the process that brought Simba and company to life on stage in her book, "The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway."
This book shares many of the challenges faced by the author as she attempted to meet Michael Eisner's desire for a traditional Broadway musical. These challenges ranged from staging unstageable scenes from the movie such as the wildebeest stampede to inventing puppets that convey all of the emotions necessary from the famous characters.
It is the sketches and photographs of the puppets that comprise most of the book. The designs are fascinating and demonstrate the amazing creativity Taymor brought to her production. Some of the puppets are so beautiful that one questions whether they belong on stage or instead should be hanging on the walls of a gallery.
"The Lion King: Pride Rock on Broadway" will be enjoyed by anyone who loved Simba and his friends--both on the screen and on stage.
