'A Lion Called Christian' by Anthony 'Ace' Bourke and John Rendall was a most interesting book that I found difficult to put down. Written as freely as only they could tell of 'How it actually was'.
It was a clear recollection of the days with Christian, what it was like to actually own a real Lion, and I think quite unknowing to even themselves - the thrill, wonder and anticipation that came with being in charge of this beautiful animal which had become a part of their young lives.
A truly wonderful experience that I could relate to on reading their recollection of how Christian had this lovely musty smell about him, and again watching the 'reunion' I felt his warm and welcoming greeting, such a 'greeting' that many humans are incapable of showing. This is indeed 'the' best story I have ever read, not just because it's a story about a lovely animal, but this one was an incredible animal brought up and taught right from wrong by two intelligent young men. It is amazing what can be achieved when you bring up any animal - (or child for that matter) in a happy atmosphere and with 'love' - the most important ingredient in any relationship. When Bryan Seymour asked if they were 'not frightened' when this lion ran towards them on their reunion, - Anthony said ..'but we got the best'...and that the lyrics of the song played on the video on youtube..' I shall always love you..' was an indication 'that everything would be altight'. Modest? - I think so. 'Christian, John and Ace' - What a team!

This book was first published in the early Seventies and has been updated with some wonderful pictures and of course the benefit of hindsight.
The story follows two very hip Australian lads who settle in the Kings Road with a pet lion, purchased from Harrods.
The style is gentle and easy going, exploring their feelings for the lion and Christian's behaviour towards them as they raise him from a cub.
It's a gorgeous story which is very hard to put down.
Enjoyable, nicely written and moving.

I read the original book many years ago but thought my daughter might like the account of Christian's life in London and Africa, but she didn't even get past the first page. Nevertheless I enjoyed the story again. I had totally missed the YouTube sensation as we weren't in the country at the time and life that year for me was pretty hectic.
Basically it is a story - true account of how two Australians buy a lion cub from Harrods in 1969. They spent a few enjoyable months in London together before realising the lion cub is growing very quickly and begin to think about what they could do with him now as they didn't want him to end up pacing the cages of a zoo (as his parent's did). A chance meeting with the stars of 'Born Free' start them thinking about Africa as Christians final destination and they start putting the plan into action. They organise for him to go to George Adamson. A year later they return and are greeted by a loving lion - this is what has apparently been all over YouTube (though off to view it in a minute). I love the inclusion of all the photo's. Glad to see Christian successfully adapted to his life in Africa.
