Review

'Murray Watts has written a modern classic. With simple words in fine phrases he paints the stories as vividly as Helen Cann illustrates them. Murray Watts projects onto the screen of a child's imagination indelible pictures of the greatest story ever told.' -- Rt Rev James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool

5.0 out of 5 stars a magnificent illustrated Bible 19 Dec 2003
Format:Hardcover
As a Bible for children, this is written by Murray Watts with clarity and insight, with dialogue that makes the stories understandable, from the child's early years of reading up until they are ready for their first complete Bible.
The text will be appreciated for many years of youth, and the illustrations will be loved for a lifetime.

I bought this book for the artwork by Helen Cann, which is magnificent. As an artist/illustrator, I am awed by the work that has gone into this volume, and find a great affinity with her style. The emotion she evokes in her beautiful faces is remarkable, and she uses rich colors and graceful patterns; the perspectives are also of interest, some panoramic, seen from above, and the illustration of Jonah is pictured as a circle, as if he were caught in a whorl. Helen loves the ocean, and paints her seas with passion, and her depictions of Jesus are exquisite. My favorite picture is of Jesus and John the Baptist on page 226.
The satin-finish pages are thick, and the font size is large and easy on the eyes. The layout is exceptional with each page edged with a lovely design, and the illustrations are too numerous to count. The final two pages have a marvelous map of "The Lands of the Bible". This book is a tremendous value, and one that will be treasured by all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations, movingly rewritten 10 Feb 2009
By K. Z. Sobol TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I first bought this as a gift for my godson having read a number of reviews praising this edition. I was certainly anything but disappointed. The illustrations are eye-catching and beautiful, with such intricate detail. The stories have all been retold with great care and attention to detail. I liked it so much I then bought one for my daughter and it is her favourite book to have for story time before bed. Some of the stories have moved me to tears - highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very nice book. 21 Feb 2010
By Mrs M
Format:Hardcover
Our 7 year old daughter wanted a Bible for christmas - neither of us are religious, but she has been learning about God, Jesus etc at school and wanted a Bible.

Glad I read reviews here. Seems obvious, but if you are after an easy to read book of 'Bible Stories', then this is perhaps not for you. Its a Children's bible - it covers old and new testament, not just the well known stuff like Joseph, Samson, Moses, but a lot of the content was of the lesser known bits.

Still, really nice book for reading with children and some excellent illustrations.

First one had to go back, due to a bashed corner of the book, but replaced immediately by Amazon.

I bought this bible for my 2 grandchildren aged 4 and 6 years. They like the illustrations and the content is about right. They will enjoy it more as they get older. A good bible to read to children.

4.0 out of 5 stars Christening present 8 Mar 2010
Format:Hardcover
My great nephew is being christened and my son has been asked to be god father. As he has never done this before, I suggested a bible in story form as my children had them when they were christened and of all the presents that they had, they used this the most. This one has lovely pictures and would be a great bedtime read from very young.

This book has brillant illustrations to go with the stories and I like the way it tells you which chapter the readings are taken from e.g. Genesis 3. It's a lovely book to read with your child.

Bought this for our grandson, but quickly realised we needed one too! The stunning artwork and storyline beckons all ages into the world of the Bible in a child-like but not childish fashion.
